The Political Science Unit at Luleå University of Technology is part of the Department of Business Administration, Technology and Social Sciences. The Unit aims to produce internationally oriented research and education with a focus on questions concerning natural resources, energy and the environment, as well as on how the administration of and institutions for these issues are approached by individuals, different interest groups, and political and administrative systems. The research conducted at the Political Science Unit is often multidisciplinary in nature, and is primarily carried out in collaboration with the disciplines of History, Economics and Law. Research collaboration also regularly occurs with the technical disciplines at the University as well as with researchers in other domestic and international universities.

This Political Science Unit is now announcing two Ph.D. student positions within the broader research profile of the Unit. The positions are open, but the candidate is expected to conduct research that contributes to the research environment of the Unit. It is also possible that one or both of the candidates will conduct their research within one or several ongoing research projects at the Unit.

Subject description

Political Science is the scientific study of politics and political systems, and comprises both empirical and theoretical studies. The research is primarily concerned with issues regarding how individuals and interest groups as well as various political and administrative systems deal with natural resources, energy and environmentally related conflicts and agreements. Disciplinary orientation is mainly public policy and administration, institutional analysis, comparative politics, public opinion studies and political theory.

Duties

The PhD position is funded for four years, full time.Duties include research, course work, participation in seminars and teaching. Administration and/or teaching of a maximum of 20% of full time may be added.

Qualifications

A masters exam with 60 hp / 120 ECTS credits with Political Science (or eqvivalent subject/area) as main subject/main area.In addition to previous academic performance, the following criteria will be used in assessing candidates:

  • Methodological skills
  • Knowledge of political science theories and frameworks
  • Ability to work collaboratively
  • Interest in and ability to work across disciplinary boundaries
  • English language proficiency
