SUPRA Support Programme for Asian Studies

NIAS SUPRA denotes a support programme comprising of several different forms of research support, which is offered to students and researchers, including a number of online services available at NIAS, as well as outside the institute. The programme is open to students resident in the Nordic countries, who have been admitted to a university MA or PhD programme, and who actively carry out work on an Asian topic. SUPRA also gives researchers the opportunity to come to NIAS and carry out their research for a shorter or longer period. Furthermore, Nordic networks focusing on Asia can apply for support to e.g. workshops and conferences.

The Support Programme for Asian Studies offers the following possibilities:

• Workplaces for Master students

• SUPRA Nordic Scholarship

• Guest researcher stays

• Offices for PhD-Students

• Network Support

SUPRA Nordic Scholarship

The Scholarship is one of the most important features of NIAS’ Support Programme for Asian Studies. It is designed to make NIAS’ digital library and other resources accessible to PhD candidates and graduate students in the Nordic countries. A scholarship covers inexpensive travel to and from Copenhagen and accommodation in a NIAS room at Nordisk Kollegium with full board for a period of two weeks. Students from institutions belonging to the ‘Nordic NIAS Council’ (www.nias.ku.dk/nnc) will have priority access to fully-financed NIAS SUPRA Scholarships. Students from institutions outside the Nordic NIAS Council institutions are also eligible for the scholarship, but will have to cover their own travel expenses to and from Copenhagen. Stays are arranged subject to a time schedule administered by NIAS.

The stipends will get a comprehensive introduction to the use of the NIAS LINC resources. The students and doctoral candidates will have at their disposal a suitably equipped work place. They will be able to interact with NIAS researchers and will have the opportunity to participate in the various activities at NIAS while being here.

Other services include thesis advice, invitations to participation in courses and workshops, and discount on NIAS Press publications.

The application deadline for the scholarship is 1 June & 1 October
