1st Annual IPSA-HSE Summer School in Concepts, Methods and Techniques in Political Science

The 1st IPSA – HSE Summer School will be held at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, St. Petersburg, from July 30 to August 13, 2017. It co-organized by the Higher School of Economics and the International Political Science Association (IPSA) to provide basic and advance training in a wide range of social science methods and techniques.

Who can apply?

We invite scholars of political science, international relations and related disciplines from across the globe and diverse educational & professional backgrounds. The School will be of most use and interest to faculty members, post-doctoral or doctoral students, masters’ students and all who are interested in mastering their research skills using sophisticated and elaborate qualitative and quantitative techniques.

The School offers a short cultural program for participants, which includes a sightseeing tour on St. Petersburg. Students can explore attractions of the city and suburbs in their free time, with our staff ready to help them choose the best tourist route.

School Overview.

The School is organized as a series of one-week modules, each devoted to one research method. There is a possibility to combine them into a two-week course. It is possible to get 5 ECTS credits for one-week course. Each course’s syllabus includes lectures and workshops. Students will also have a chance to participate in a series of late-afternoon seminars on “Political Transformation of Postcommunist Eurasia”, leading by prominent political and social scholars from the leading Russian universities.

Courses Overview.

This year we offer 10 courses, related to either qualitative and quantitative research techniques. The latter have been chosen as the most topical and elaborate methods to boost the research on social and political issues. The difficulty level of courses varies to give basic, intermediate or advanced skills. The methods we teach are Applied Regression Analysis, Social Network Analysis, Structural Equation Modeling, Bayesian Statistics, Grounded Theory, Qualitative Comparative Analysis and Case Study Analysis.
