Chinese Language - Huayu Enrichment Scholarship

To encourage international students (excluding students from Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao) to undertake Huayu courses in the Republic of China (Taiwan), provide them with opportunities to increase their understanding of Taiwanese culture and society, and promote mutual understanding and interactions between Taiwan and the international community.

Award Value: A Monthly stipend of 25,000 NTD.

Duration

  1. Huayu Enrichment courses will include either a 2-month summer session (June and July or July and August), or regular term classes which may last 3, 6, 9, or 12 months*. (*Although the maximum duration of the scholarship is 12 months, the Chicago office retains the right to adjust the length of the scholarship awarded depending on availability.)
  2. With the exception of the summer classes, in principle, the duration of the scholarship is from September 1 to August 31 of the following year. If recipients fail to come to Taiwan for enrollment during the designated time, they will forfeit their right to retain their scholarships. c. Scholarship funding will become effective on the date of the recipient’s enrollment. Scholarship funding will end according to the scholarship’s expiration date or if the scholarship is revoked.

Available Scholarships

The Ministry of Education will consult the annual budget and provide available openings for the next year to embassies, missions, representative offices and other overseas agencies authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before December 31.

Eligibility

Each applicant must be above 18 years old and be a U.S. citizen without Chinese heritage. Those who apply to our Chicago office must also have a permanent address in U.S. Midwest**, a high-school diploma or post-secondary degree(s), an excellent academic record, and good moral character. (**US Midwest indicates: IA, IL, IN, MI, MN, NE, OH, WI, ND and SD.)

Applicants with one of the following qualifications may not apply:

  • a. Overseas Chinese student or a national of the R.O.C.(Taiwan)
  • b. Students currently registered at a Mandarin Language Center or in a degree program at a university or college in Taiwan. 
  • c. Individuals who have already received a TUSA, AMS, HES or Taiwan Scholarship in the past.
  • d. Exchange students to Taiwan during the scholarship period.
  • e. Individuals currently receiving financial benefits from the Taiwan government or other educational institutions.

Application

Applicants need to submit the following documents to our Chicago office before March 31, 2017.

  • a. Completed application form
  • b. A photocopy of applicant’s passport
  • c. A photocopy of the academic transcripts from applicant’s degree program. If the applicant is not currently enrolled in school, they should submit the transcripts from their completed degree program(s).
  • d. A photocopy of the application to a selected Mandarin language center
  • e. Study plan (can be the same as section7, the study plan, from the application form, or additional papers.)
  • f. Two recommendation letters
