Institute Research Fellowships for 2019-2020

The Jaroslaw and Nadia Mihaychuk Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Ukrainian Studies

The HURI Research Fellowships in Ukrainian Studies

The Institute's research fellowships bring scholars from the international academic community to Harvard for focused research on projects in Ukrainian history, literature, philology, culture, and other related areas of study in the humanities and social sciences fields. In addition to carrying out their own research in residence, fellows participate in the scholarly life of the University during Harvard's academic year, and offer a formal presentation based on original research.

Fellowships are funded by the endowed Dr. Jaroslaw and Nadia Mihaychuk Fellowship Fund; by a combination of HURI endowment funds, such as the Alex Woskob Family Foundation Endowment; and through the annual gift support of the Ukrainian Studies Fund, Inc. HURI is grateful for the ongoing generosity of its donors.

HURI is deeply indebted to the Eugene and Daymel Shklar Foundation for their generous support of the Shklar Fellowship program, which ran from academic year 2001-2002 through 2017-2018. Continuing the legacy of this program, the HURI Research Fellowships in Ukrainian Studies are awarded to mid-career scholars and are supported by a combination of endowed funds and annual gifts.

Eligibility:

Individuals who hold a doctorate in one of the fields listed above and who have demonstrated a commitment to Ukrainian studies are eligible to apply. Those individuals who have received their PhD or its academic equivalent (e.g., Kandydat nauk) within the past eight to ten years are especially encouraged to apply for the HURI Research Fellowship. Those individuals who are more recent PhDs or have completed and defended their dissertation by the time they submit their application are encouraged to apply for the Mihaychuk Postdoctoral Research Fellowship.

Important: You must be eligible to receive and maintain a short-term J-1 visa to carry out research on an Institute fellowship.

Stipends:

The fellowships provide a stipend of $4,400 per month to cover the cost of housing, health insurance, and other living expenses. In addition to the stipend, the awards provide for the cost of direct roundtrip travel to Harvard University.

Fellowship Tenure:

Requests for residence for periods from three to eight months will be considered; adjustments in the requested time-frame may be made at the time of award. The average tenure for a fellow has been four months, the period of either Harvard's Fall Semester or Spring Semester.
