10 funded positions for Ph.D. studies in Computer Science at GSSI in L'Aquila

The Gran Sasso Science Institute a recently established international Ph.D. school and a Center for advanced studies in L'Aquila offer 10 Ph.D. positions in Computer Science (CS).

The Ph.D. program in CS is mainly concerned with heterogeneous distributed systems and their interactions. Different perspectives are offered to provide students with the necessary tools for the design, implementation, management, and use of distributed systems.

The main research areas of interest are:
- Efficient algorithms for communication networks and social networks;
- Formal methods for systems correctness and analysis;
- Software engineering for efficient and resilient applications.

Apart from pursuing their own research studies, the successful candidates will have the opportunity to cooperate with members of the research group and of the Scientific Board, as well as with the frequent guests of the Institute.

The fellowships are awarded for three years and their yearly amount is € 16.159,91 gross. All Ph.D. students have free accommodation at the GSSI facilities and use of the canteen. Moreover all Ph.D. students:

- will have free accommodation at the GSSI facilities and use of the canteen;
- will have tuition fees waived;
- will be covered by insurance against accident and/or injury.

Please note that the submission of an application to the GSSI Ph.D. degree in the different programs of the school has to be intended as an application to a selection procedure. Depending on the number of applicants and on the selection criteria, decided by the Selection Committee, candidates will be shortlisted for a skype interview (shortlisted candidates may also choose to come to L'Aquila at their own expense).

The questions within each section should be completed in order. Once you have begun working on your application form, you can save your work and, using your email address and password, coming back later to complete your application. Fields tagged with (*) are mandatory. The application procedure can be considered as successfully completed only after receiving the confirmation email, with a short summary of your data and the files you uploaded in the attachment.

Application Materials
The documents you need to submit are:

  • copy of the University title certificate
  • academic transcripts (list of courses with grades)
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • a copy of a valid Identity Document (ID) signed and dated.

These documents, common to all applicants, must be in pdf or jpg format and each file size should not exceed 3Mb.

Depending on your program choice several additional materials are required, namely:

  • Ph.D. in Astroparticle Physics
    no additional materials required.
  • Ph.D. in Mathematics in Natural, Social, and Life Sciences:
    a single file (pdf or jpg, 3Mb maximum size) containing a synthetic report of the core courses attended in the following topics: Partial Differential Equations, Probability - stochastic processes, Functional and Numerical Analysis.
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science
    a single file (pdf or jpg, 3Mb maximum size) with a motivational letter describing the past studies and the acquired expertise, a brief research project outlining the research challenges to consider for the Ph.D. thesis, the reasons for choosing GSSI for the Ph.D. studies.
  • Ph.D. in Urban Studies and Regional Science:
    (i) Motivational letter, (ii) abstract of the master thesis in English (pdf file, 2,000 words in length).

The deadline for application is 1st September 2016 at 18.00 (Italian time zone).
