Europe and Central Asia Regional Consultation on Youth, Peace & Security, 23-25 May 2017, Turkey

Publish Date: Apr 26, 2017

Deadline: Apr 30, 2017

Be part of the Europe and Central Asia regional consultation on the role of youth in building peace and security!

On 23-25 May 2017, UNDP and UNFPA, in partnership with the Peacebuilding Support Office, will organize the Europe and Central Asia Regional Consultation on Youth, Peace and Security in Istanbul, Turkey. This event is part of a series of regional consultations with young people on issues related to peace and security.

By the end of the consultation, we aim to have: (1) a regional perspective for successfully implementing the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2250 (2015) – a groundbreaking resolution on Youth, Peace and Security that recognizes the positive role young people can and do play in conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and the prevention of violent extremism; (2) inputs for the Progress Study mandated by UNSCR 2250; and (3) a regional action plan for the continuation and promotion of peacebuilding and social cohesion.

Your voices are very important!

  • Recent studies in the region identified increasing youth challenges. These include low levels of employment and enterprise development, which have strong links to migration trends; inadequate supply of vocational education and leadership development training required to match private sector needs; limited engagement and participation in national and local decision-making; and issues related to psychosocial and healthy lifestyle support, and gender inequalities and harmful practices.

  • As is the case in other regions, many countries in Europe and Central Asia have recently been shaken by terrorism-related events. Many young people in the region are engaged as activists, organizers, leaders and researchers in preventing the rise and influence of violence and violent extremism by fostering tolerance and peace, particularly for and among youth. Young people’s force for peace must therefore be tapped into for the benefit of their communities, including through the implementation of UNSCR 2250.

If you are between 18 to 31 years old, from Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Montenegro, Russia, Serbia, Tajikistan, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan, and Kosovo, and part of a youth-led organization involved in peacebuilding activities or activism, we encourage you to apply to participate in our consultation in Istanbul.
