Erasmus Mundus Global Studies Joint Master Program 2017

Erasmus Mundus: Global Studies (EMGS)

Following in 2005 a call for application by the European Commission, the Consortium of the Joint Master’s course in "Global Studies – A European perspective" came into existence and in 2010 funding was approved for a further 5 years.

The founding members of the European Master in Global Studies (EMGS) Consortium comprised besides the University of Leipzig three leading European universities, namely the prestigious London School of Economics and Political Science (UK), the University of Vienna (Austria) and the University of Wroclaw (Poland).

In 2007 the EMGS-Consortium established partnerships with four well-known non-European Universities that are the Dalhousie University (Canada), the Macquarie University (Australia), the University of California at Santa Barbara (USA), University of Stellenbosch (South Africa) which allows to offer to European students to study for one term at one of them.

In 2010 the Consortium was extended to the Roskilde University (Denmark), the Fudan University (China) and the Jawaharlal Nehru University (India) covering an even broader geographical area and academic scope.

In 2015 the Ghent University (Belgium) joined the programme as a further Partner University.

Students choosing the programme study at two different European universities, at each for one academic year. After having successful completed the programme they are able to analyze processes of globalization in various academic ways and are thus well-prepared for both, academic positions dealing with global phenomena and jobs in supranational agencies and non-governmental organizations, as they are ready to work as intercultural mediators and in the fields of development cooperation, economy, management and beyond.

The EMGS-consortium holds a winter school and a summer school every year, which consists of workshops and lectures offered by the teaching staff of all our Consortium universities. During these events student groups from the different places come together to get to know their colleagues and to experience the transnationality of their study programm.

A further annual highlight in the EMGS-Consortium schedule is the Graduation Ceremony that is organized every November celebrating the successful completion of the Master degree and handing out the graduation certificate.

Thanks to the Erasmus Mundus programme the EMGS-Consortium is in the favourable position to offer for some selected students full-time grants.

In 2008 the programme was awarded the quality label “TOP 10 International Master’s degree courses” produced in Germany by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for its innovative concept, high-quality teaching, high degree of internationalization, comprehensive quality assurance mechanisms, excellent support service as well as convincing alumni results.

The continuous quality of the programme is assured through a constant evaluation process by its students, and alumni, the teaching and administrative personnel, as well as by external review.

Tuition

The consortium charges a tuition fee of €4,000 per-year to nationals from Erasmus+ programme countries and €5,500 per-year to all other nationals. Given the comparatively high tuition fees charged in the United Kingdom, applicants should be aware that specific regulations do apply for self-paying students at the London School of Economics.

The tuition fee covers the participation of all classes offered within the European Master in Global Studies and includes also support in administrative and organizational issues by a local coordinator. However students will need to cover for the travel costs to winter and summer school on their own.

Erasmus Mundus Grants

Under Action 1 of Erasmus Mundus, the EU Commission offers scholarships to selected highly qualified students from Erasmus+ partner countries. This scholarship covers all tuition fees. The scholarships currently include a single travel allowance between €5,000 and 7,000 (depending on the country of origin) and a living allowance of €1,000 per month. The scholarship also includes basic medical coverage.

All applications arriving by the deadline at the office in Leipzig are automatically taken into consideration for the Erasmus Mundus scholarship.

The EU will provide a maximum of 8 Erasmus Mundus scholarships per intake for the years 2015, 2016 and 2017.

According to the EU "Partner Country students are students who are not residents nor have carried out their main activity (studies, training or work) for more than a total of 12 months over the last 5 years in an Erasmus+ Programme Country. The 5-year reference period for this 12-month rule is calculated as from the submission deadline", that is in the case of the Global Studies Programme March 30th).

All students applying to more than 3 Erasmus Mundus Master courses or who did receive an Erasmus Mundus grant before will automatically disqualify for the scholarship.
