The Conference Political Mobilization of Ethnic Minorities and Anti-Minority Discourse in Europe will be held in Cluj-Napoca, on September 15-17, 2016, marking the end of our five year project.

Call For Papers

Over the last few years the political mobilization of different types of ethnic groups, together with the antidiversity discourse unleashed by this mobilization took various forms in Europe. They oscillated between statements of several political leaders regarding the failure of multiculturalism, the electoral success of radical right parties, the intense debates regarding the integration of ethnic minorities, and the recent waves of refugees. This conference intends to provide an interdisciplinary space for various perspectives and approaches which try understand, explain and offer solutions to these contemporary processes. It aims to create a fruitful exchange of ideas that could address the simultaneous challenges faced by the European continent with respect to the mobilization of ethnic minorities and anti-minority discourse. The organizers encourage three types of papers: theoretical (firmly grounded in general concepts and theories), methodological (addressing problems of measurement) and empirical (seeking to understand and explain mechanisms and processes). Both single-case studies and comparative (large and small-N) analyses of European countries are welcome, without any preference given to qualitative or quantitative techniques.

Paper Topic

Applicants are invited to submit papers covering one of the following topics, but not limited to:

  • Theories related to the mobilization of ethnic groups, both autochtonous and migration generated
  • Research methods applied to the study of ethnic groups
  • Patterns of mobilization in the case of ethnic migrants and autochtonous minorities
  • Institutional determinants and consequences of political mobilization of migrants
  • Determinants of associative behavior of migrants in European countries
  • Opportunity structures for mobilization in the post-EU-accession period
  • Perceptions of discrimination among migrants
  • Group mobilization and individual-level participation in the case of migrants
  • The impact of minority mobilization as reflected in host-states
  • Majority responses to the various types of ethnic mobilization
  • Types and determinants of anti-minority discourse in European countries
