Coimbra Group Scholarship Programme for Young Researchers from the European Neighbourhood 2016

Universities of the Coimbra Group offer short-term visits to young researchers from higher education institutions from countries in the European Neighbourhood. The main aim of this scholarship programme is to enable scholars to undertake research in which they are engaged in their home institution and to help them to establish academic and research contacts. The scholarships are financially supported by the Coimbra Group member universities participating in this programme, while the Coimbra Group Office is in charge of the administrative management of the applications.

The eligible countries for the 2016 edition are listed below. Please note that some Coimbra Group Universities may restrict the eligibility to some of the countries listed below – to find out if your country is eligible, please refer to the “Remarks” section in the table at the end of this document.

Albania, Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Egypt, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Georgia, Israel, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Libya, Moldova, Montenegro, Morocco, the Palestinian Authority, Russia (only for grants at the University of Groningen), Serbia, Syria, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.

The following Coimbra Group Universities are participating in the 2016 edition of the Coimbra Group Scholarship Programme

  • University of Granada (Spain)
  • Karl-Franzens University of Graz (Austria)
  • University of Groningen (the Netherlands)
  • University of Heidelberg (Germany)
  • Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi (Romania)
  • KU Leuven (Belgium)
  • University of Padova (Italy)
  • University of Poitiers (France)
  • University of Salamanca (Spain)

Eligibility Applicants must fulfil all the following criteria

  • be under the age of 35
  • be nationals of and current residents in one of the above-listed countries
  • be current academic staff members of a university or an equivalent higher education institution located in one of the above-listed countries and be of postdoctoral or equivalent status, although some institutions may offer opportunities to doctoral students

Application Procedure

Candidates may apply for one university only. Multiple applications will not be considered valid. Only the universities listed in the table below are taking part in the 2016 edition of the Coimbra Group Scholarship Programme. Applicants will be able to fill in the on-line registration until 31 March 2016 on the Coimbra Group web site: www.coimbragroup.eu/activities/scholarships.

Applicants are not expected to provide any documents at this stage, although they may be requested to do so by the university they have applied for at a later stage. Candidates must indicate the name and contact details of an academic supervisor at the host university and provide proof of acceptance (a letter or e-mail) by this supervisor where it is clearly stated that he/she is willing to supervise the work of the candidate during the research stay at the Coimbra Group University. This letter should be uploaded on the application form. Applications which do not fulfil this requirement will not be considered.

Information should be submitted in English. Applicants will receive a confirmation message from the Coimbra Group Office within 2 weeks following the submission of their application. If you do not receive this confirmation message, you must notify our office by sending an email to Cristina.Tanase@coimbra-group.eu, no later than one week following the deadline of 31 March

Selection Procedure

The administrative check of applications will be undertaken by the Coimbra Group Office in order to select candidates who meet the eligibility criteria. The selection of candidates will be undertaken by the host universities. When selection has been agreed upon, the host university may send a letter of invitation directly to the successful candidate. The Coimbra Group Office will contact all candidates and inform them about the result of their application. Successful candidates currently employed by a University are responsible for ensuring that their home institution will grant them leave of absence to undertake the proposed visit.
