About the fellowship

The Georgetown University Center for Contemporary Arab Studies (CCAS) is very pleased to announce the establishment of the American Druze Foundation (ADF) Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Druze and Arab Studies. The purpose of the ADF Fellowship is to promote specialized social scientific research on the Druze communities centrally and primarily, and on collective political and cultural identities in the Arab world more generally. The ADF Post-Doctoral Fellowship supports academic research in the disciplines of history, political science, sociology, economics, anthropology, and archaeology. It cannot be used to support research that relates essentially to matters theological or religious in scope and nature.
The fellowship is for one academic year (August through May), and offers an annual stipend of $50,000, in addition to $5,000 in research funds.

During the academic year, the Fellow must continue to conduct research on the Druze or other intentional political and cultural communities in the Arab world, in order to transform the doctoral dissertation into a book manuscript for publication. The Fellow is encouraged to deliver a public lecture on a relevant topic to be determined with the Director of the CCAS, and must design and teach for CCAS one graduate seminar on the Druze and the broader topics of socio-cultural pluralism, identity politics, and subnational communities in the Arab world.

Finally, the Fellow must be in residence at the CCAS for the duration of the academic year.

The Center's Master of Arts in Arab Studies (MAAS) program emphasizes a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to the Arab world and rigorous Arabic language training. The academic program of CCAS draws on the talents and expertise of faculty who design innovative courses and engage in ground-breaking research on the politics, socio-economics, cultures, and history of the region.  Georgetown offers more than 100 Arab world-related courses each year through CCAS, and the departments of Arabic and Islamic Studies, history, government, business, and law, among others. Since its founding in 1975, CCAS has prepared new generations of diplomats, business leaders, scholars, teachers, and policymakers capable of critical thought, constructive dialogue, and creative engagement with the Arab world. The Center enriches the academic experience with extensive programs including lectures, seminars, conferences, and educational outreach workshops, as well as a vibrant publications program.
