Summer School - Data-Driven Public Health, 2022, University of Groningen, Netherlands

Publish Date: Mar 14, 2022

Deadline: May 01, 2022

Event Dates: from Jun 27, 2022 12:00 to Jul 01, 2022 12:00

Inequalities are omnipresent. Some of these may be inevitable, some may be amenable to interventions. Health is regarded as one of the most important assets of individuals. Although inequity in the domain of health is generally considered unacceptable, policymakers often have trouble identifying inequity, the causes thereof, let alone developing and implementing measures to address inequity. Over the past decades, the importance of data for tackling inequalities and potentially inequities too is becoming more and more apparent. Learning how to signal and identify problematic inequalities and inequity, together with relevant stakeholders such as officials, health authorities, professionals, as well as the public, is an important skill to incorporate in your toolbox as a public health expert.
In the summer school Data Driven Public Health (DDPH), participants are taught how to leverage the power of data for tackling societal inequalities and achieving equity. To do so, participants will have to become familiar with the steps of the Data-Driven Prevention Cycle (D2PC). We start with getting acquainted with prevention policy and legal perspectives. Thereafter, we will take our first dive into the data in order to discover its potential uses. However, leveraging data to the fullest extent requires a well-defined research question that aligns well with the vision of all involved stakeholders. Once you have defined the research question and prepared the data, it is time to get acquainted with the statistical approaches required to obtain the answers you seek. Lastly, participants tackle the final step of the D2PC: bringing the results back to the field! What might be feasible solutions, and how to monitor their effects?
Are you ready for the public health challenges of the future? Do you want to learn the value of data for public health during hands-on research sessions? Then DDPH at the Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health is the summer course to attend!
