Call for Papers on Environmental, Social, and Governance Investment: Opportunities and Risks for Asia

Environmental, Social, and Governance Investment: Opportunities and Risks for Asia
Asian Development Bank Institute and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-JAPAN Centre
Tokyo, Japan
12–13 November 2019

Investors are increasingly integrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues into their investment decisions. Currently, more than half of managed assets in Europe are linked to ESG factors while in Japan, ESG investment grew 8.7 times between 2015-2018.

In principle, ESG investment could help to bridge the gap between profit-driven investment and economic and social sustainability in Asia and the Pacific. However, a number of challenges cloud the potential for ESG investment breakthroughs such as:

  • Unclear and varied sustainable investment criteria
  • Resource misallocation risk
  • Unclear paths to incorporating changing technology
  • Untested impacts on corporate values and social issues
  • Uncertain quality of non-financial data and lack of disclosure
  • ESG investment criteria discrepancies between developed and developing countries

ADBI and the ASEAN-Japan Centre welcome paper submissions exploring ESG investment benefits and risks, and its capacity to facilitate sustainable development in the region. Areas of interest include but are not limited to:

  • How ESG investment like impact investing and responsible lending affects the performance of corporate sectors, enterprise values, and social issues
  • How ESG factors affects government funding costs, FDI, and wealth generation
  • Quality and disclosure of non-financial data
  • Effectiveness of evaluation and quantitative analysis
  • Regulatory implications of ESG investment
  • How ESG investment could impact economic development in Asia and the Pacific
