What is the Zero Hunger Internship Program?
The Zero Hunger Internship Program is a paid summer leadership development opportunity for college students who are interested in federal anti-hunger policy. Interns work in Washington, D.C., for 10 weeks at organizations that focus on domestic or global hunger. In addition to participating in leadership development training through the Congressional Hunger Center, interns also attend a five-part Summer Seminar Seriesabout domestic and global hunger, public policy, and advocacy. The Summer 2019 cohort will consist of 8-10 motivated individuals committed to careers in the anti-hunger field.
The program allows undergraduate students or individuals who have graduated within a year a paid opportunity for on-the-job training and a robust learning experience. Zero Hunger Interns learn about the anti-hunger field, policy, program implementation, development and fundraising, and nonprofit management through their internship placements.
During the internship, program participants support the learning and growth of their fellow interns while also participating in leadership development trainings based on the Hunger Center’s Leadership Capabilities Model. Zero Hunger Interns also complete a research project on a hunger topic of their choosing and present their findings to stakeholders of the Hunger Center at the end of the program.
The dual goals of the program are to build the capacity of organizations fighting hunger and to develop interns into anti-hunger leaders who will return to their campus communities ready to advocate for a hunger-free future.

The Hunger Center seeks talented applicants with a variety of interests and backgrounds who are dedicated to fighting hunger and poverty on a global scale. We know that a diversity of perspectives from different communities, cultures and lived experiences is critical to solving the complex challenge of hunger. Accordingly, individuals from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds as well as those with lived experience of food insecurity are encouraged to apply.
Program Benefits
The Hunger Center provides Zero Hunger Interns with:
- Financial support: Each intern receives a financial package of up to $5,200 designed to support living expenses in Washington, D.C. for 10 weeks. In addition, the Hunger Center will cover travel to and from Washington at the beginning and end of the summer
- Leadership development training: Zero Hunger Interns complete a leadership development curriculum based on our Leadership Capabilities Model, tailored to the needs of college students.
- Membership in a dynamic learning cohort of interns: Interns will conduct research and attend the Summer Seminar Series and leadership trainings as a cohort. Interns possess a variety of racial, ethnic, and geographic backgrounds and bring to the cohort a diversity of work experiences and expertise. Accordingly, each internship cohort comprises a valuable learning community.
- Connection to an extensive network: Interns will have access to the Hunger Center’s network of alums, partners, and experts, including participants from our Bill Emerson National Hunger Fellowship Program and Mickey Leland International Hunger Fellowship Program.
Summer Seminar Series
The Hunger Center is committed to developing a broad group of leaders in the fight for food and nutrition security. In addition to the work they do at their placement sites, Zero Hunger Interns complete an anti-hunger advocacy curriculum during their 10 weeks in Washington, D.C. This curriculum is delivered in a five-part Summer Seminar series that is free and open to all interns in Washington, D.C.
The curriculum, held in different locations around Washington, will cover the following topics:
- Domestic Hunger and Poverty
- Global Hunger and Poverty
- The Root Causes of Domestic and Global Hunger and Poverty
- The Policy Making Process
- Advocacy
Each half-day training will feature experts in the anti-hunger field. Each training will also include a leadership or professional development component. Seminar participants will learn from lectures and participate in discussions and learning simulations. In addition, they will network and exchange ideas with the other attendees.
The Summer Seminar Series is a leadership development offering of the Congressional Hunger Center. Individuals who attend at least 4 of the 5 trainings will receive a certificate from the Hunger Center.
