13th Symposium Syriacum and the 11th Congress of Arab Christian studies
The event is being organized in collaboration with and under the patronage of the Société d’études syriaques. Beginning this autumn, the website of the Société d’études syriaques will contain updated information concerning the conference, where you will be able to find the list of the honorary committee and further and more detailed information regarding registration, Paris housing options, as well as provisional programs for both scholarly events and cultural activities, as their details become firm.
Conference venue
The Institut national des Langues et Civilisations Orientales has generously offered to host the conference in its spacious and modern buildings, thus allowing for plenary sessions, parallel sessions, coffee breaks, and stands for publishers to be easily accessible in the same location, in a university neighborhood situated close not only to the Bibliothèque nationale de France (François Mitterrand site) and the Grands Moulins de Paris (Université Paris VII et INALCO), but also to the animation of the banks of the Seine!
Scholarly matters
Both congresses are open to all aspects of scholarly study. We also hope to organize the conference as much as possible in terms of smaller units structured around thematic workshops or round tables, assembling 5, 7 or even 12 individual papers. These thematic parallel sessions could thus result in separate publications edited by their organizers. Transversal projects in both Syriac and Christian Arab studies are particularly welcome. We are thus issuing a call specifically for such workshop and round table proposals, for which the organizers may already begin to invite colleagues for contributions.
Individual papers should be 20 minutes in length and each will be followed by 10 minutes for questions and discussion, with each participant limited to one single contribution in each of the two congresses. Doctoral students and younger scholars at the beginning of their career are especially encouraged to participate, as well as posters regarding ongoing projects or “work in progress”, particularly those in the digital humanities.
2020 may still seem the distant future, but conference preparations have already begun! On behalf of the organizing committee, we have the great pleasure to invite you to the 13th Symposium Syriacum and the 11th Congress of Arab Christian studies, which will take place in Paris, from 6 to 11 July 2020.
Proposals for individual papers, posters, or thematic workshops will be evaluated by the scientific committee, often on the basis of evaluations received from colleagues outside of France. In the case of workshops and round tables, the scientific committee may suggest individual contributions that would be appropriate.
Housing
Everyone is responsible for organizing her or his own housing. However, helpful information and suggestions will be posted to the website of the Société d’études syriaques regarding local religious establishments which provide housing, the cité universitaire and youth hostels, thus allowing everyone to find affordable lodging. Links to websites of hotels, rooms-to-let, or apartments available for short term stays, will also be posted.
Cultural activities
Paris offers a rich and varied selection of cultural activities, for all tastes, which accompanying partners, spouses and children will easily identify — We do not mention the conference participants, since they will be concentrating on other things! The scholarly committee has foreseen a number of organized visits and other cultural events which will be announced at a later time.
