What is it?

EMPAPOSTDOCS-II is an individual-driven research and career advancing fellowship which follows a bottom-up approach and offers incoming and re-integrating international mobile researchers a 2-year full employment contract at Empa. It allows experienced researchers from all over the world to set up and implement a research project and get the opportunity to work on their own research idea at one of the 30 research laboratories of Empa. The following research areas welcome applications:

• Nanostructured Materials

• Sustainable Built Environment

• Health and Performance

• Natural Resources and Pollutants

• Energy

Projects can be carried out in the three sites of Empa at Zurich, St. Gallen or Thun depending on the location of the lab. The fellows can choose their topic and destination within this frame.

Who is eligible?

There are two mobility schemes in the EMPAPOSTDOCS-II programme, the incoming mobilityscheme and the re-integration scheme. Regardless of the mobility scheme, the main eligibility criteria for the Empa Postdocs programme are the following:

The applicant must

  • Be an experienced researcher: at the time of the application deadline be in possession of a doctoral degree, irrespective of the time taken to acquire it.
  • Not have finished her/his PhD more than six years before.

The point of time of reference for these dates is the call closure.

For the incoming mobility scheme, a specific eligibility criterion is that the applicant must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in Switzerland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the application deadline. Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account.

For the re-integration scheme, the specific eligibility criteria are:

  • The researcher originates from the EU-27 or Associated Countries;
  • The researcher has been active in research in a third country for at least three years and in the last 12 months immediately prior to the application deadline.

What are the financial provisions?

EMPAPOSTDOCS-II offers a highly competitive living allowance, research cost contribution and mobility package. Salary at Empa is defined based on function, experience and performance.

What is the aim?

EMPAPOSTDOCS-II wishes to make a significant contribution to the European Research Area by training excellent researchers with scientific and transferable skills to enable them for a successful career. The program offers attractive working conditions in an excellent research institute with high-end infrastructure and a thriving working environment.

What are the next steps?

Applications can only be submitted together with an Empa-based mentor. You will find the list of mentors in the box to the right. Only one proposal per individual researcher will be evaluated. Welcome fellows!
Empa CEO Gian-Luca Bona (fourth from left) and COFUND Project Manager Juliane Sauer (right) welcoming the new postdocs and informing them about Empa’s research focus areas and the in-house services available in Dübendorf, St. Gallen and Thun.

On 19 March 2018 Empa once again welcomed 20 postdocs who receive funding by the EU's COFUND program. The junior scientists in the EMPAPOSTDOCS-II group who hail from Europe, Asia and Australia bring their expertise from universities around the globe to the table in Empa's research network and are looking to gain new experiences for their further careers.

The fellows are involved in practically every walk of Empa research: novel batteries, additive manufacturing (AM), carbon-based electronics, noise-absorbing metamaterials, nanocomposites, synthetic skin, wound-healing gels, textiles, concrete research and monitoring greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Empa CEO Gian-Luca Bona advised the new Empa researchers to network as well as possible: "Leave your labs and talk to colleagues about the problems you face. Research is not predictable - and someone out there might well have a smart idea on how you could proceed."

Acknowledgement of funding

The EMPAPOSTDOCS-II programme has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement number 754364.
