The aim of the summer course is to examine how post-Soviet states function from a comparative perspective. You will start with historical and political contexts by scrutinizing how the common Soviet legacy affected relations between the state and the economy. You will focus next on such questions as how post-Soviet political regimes are understood and theoretically conceptualised. Comparing regional variations in post-Soviet trajectories, you will study such questions as which actors can be identified in governance processes, how they are connected as well as how they compete for power and legitimacy. Specific issues include the phenomenon of colour revolutions, organised crime and corruption. The curriculum combines a range of case studies from the post-Soviet regions with group work discussions and simulation exercises.
The summer school is open to graduate and advanced undergraduate students of political science, international relations, sociology and other related areas living and studying in Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine, Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Germany.

Travel costs for students travelling from Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine, Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan are also covered by the DAAD.
