Carlos E. Castañeda Postdoctoral Fellowship in Mexican American Studies

The Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS) in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Austin is pleased to announce the Carlos E. Castañeda Postdoctoral Fellowship in Mexican American Studies. Supported by the Office of the President, this postdoctoral fellowship was established in memory of Professor Carlos Eduardo Castañeda (1896–1958), a UT Austin alumnus, librarian, and faculty member who was instrumental in the creation of the renown LLILAS Benson Latin American Collection.

CMAS is accepting applications for this twelve-month appointment (September 1, 2018 – August 31, 2019). The Castañeda Fellow is expected to reside in the Austin area during the entire period of his or her appointment.

The Castañeda Fellow is expected to make a contribution to CMAS's research program in the form of a major research or writing project. Use of the Mexican American archival materials at the LLILAS Benson Latin American Collection is encouraged. In addition, the Fellow is required to teach one undergraduate course in the Department of Mexican American and Latino Studies (MALS) during her or his residency. She or he is also required to deliver a public lecture in CMAS while in residency and to otherwise actively participate in the intellectual life of the Center. The fellow will receive a stipend of $48,000, a $2,000 research fund, a $1,000 moving allowance, shared office space, logistical office support, and health insurance benefits. The University of Texas at Austin is unable to pay Fellow' salaries through their home institutions. CMAS is required by university policy to pay Fellows directly.

Applicants must have completed the doctoral degree within the three years prior to the beginning of the fellowship year (Conferral January 2015 – December 2017). Current UT Austin faculty members and recent UT Austin doctoral recipients are not eligible.

A complete application will consist of the following materials:

  • Letter of Application (not to exceed three pages detailing a research plan for award period)
  • Writing Sample (double-spaced, not to exceed 30 pages in length)
  • Academic Transcript (from the doctoral-granting institution with proof of degree conferral)
  • Course Description (for either a lower-division or upper-division undergraduate course in Mexican American Studies, not to exceed two pages)
  • Three Letters of Recommendation
  • Curriculum Vitae

The application deadline is 5:00 p.m. CST on Monday, December 4, 2017.

All application materials must be submitted electronically as PDF documents via Interfolio (link coming soon), including letters of recommendation.
