Youth Drinking Cultures Research Scholarships 2017, La Trobe University, Australia

Publish Date: Feb 03, 2017

Deadline: Mar 01, 2017

About the scholarship

Young people today are drinking less alcohol than the generations before them. What is driving this change in youth behaviour?

Over the past 15 years, rates of drinking among teenagers have steadily declined in Australia. Similar trends have been identified internationally but there has been little progress in identifying the factors underlying these developments. This project will use quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate whether these reductions are being driven by policy, changes in youth leisure time, shifts in social and cultural norms and/or family influences.

Two prestigious Australian Research Council (ARC) scholarships, one quantitative and one qualitative, will be awarded to outstanding applicants who are interested in exploring the factors driving reductions in teenage drinking. This project is located with the Centre for Alcohol Policy Research in the School of Psychology and Public Health.

Applicants should have a high level of achievement, including a first class honours degree or equivalent.

As an applicant you should have an interest in sociology, youth studies, epidemiology, public health, cultural studies or a similar social sciences field. One qualitative and one quantitative PhD will be offered exploring the social, cultural, environmental, economic and political influences on youth drinking practices.
