Geometry
The summer course on Geometry aims to cover a spectrum of modern geometry as broad as possible, as well their interaction with neighbouring fields such as logic, Lie and number theory. Each day of the summer school is dedicated to one of these subjects. The target audience is mathematics students with at least two years of mathematics at bachelor level, including basic topology and algebra.
The summer course on Geometry is organised by the Utrecht Geometry Centre.
Geometry is the theory of space. "Space” is a multi-faceted concept: it refers equally well to the phase space of a classical mechanical system, the differential-geometrical space of general relativity or the operator-theoretic space of quantum mechanics from physics, as to the internet as a huge graph of connections.
The summer course on Geometry, which is organised by the Utrecht Geometry Centre, aims to cover a spectrum of modern Geometry as broad as possible, as well their interaction with neighbouring fields such as logic, Lie and number theory.
A limited number of scholarships in the form of fee waivers (max. €375 per student) is available, see Scholarships below. UU students or students accepted for the UU MSc programme Mathematical Sciences are exempted from paying the full Summer School course fee (they pay €75 for the course materials).
Course director
Dr. Johan van de Leur
Target audience
Mathematics students with at least two years of mathematics at bachelor level, including basic topology and algebra (groups/rings) or physics students with a basic knowledge of mathematics including basic topology and algebra (groups/rings).
Course aim
This course aims to cover a spectrum of modern geometry, such as:
symplectic geometry, algebraic geometry, number theory, logic, Lie theory and possible applications in physics. Each day of the summer school is dedicated to one of these subjects. Lectures alternate with problem sessions. Please find the full programme in the day-to-day programme (PDF) above.
Study load
Lectures and problem sessions in the morning and afternoon.
Costs
Course fee
€ 450.00
Housing fee
€ 350.00
Housing through Utrecht Summer School
Scholarships
A limited number of scholarships in the form of fee waivers (max. €375 per student) is available. There are no travel grants, grants for housing costs or for course material available.
You can apply for the scholarship together with your application for the summer school. If you would like to apply for the scholarship, please mention this in your motivation letter. Describe how your participation will assist you in future studies and your career. The applications for scholarships will undergo a selection procedure.
