Big Data in Health Research
This summer course is a joint activity from University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU) and University College London (UCL). During this summer course, participants will learn the key characteristics of Big data in health research. In addition, you will learn recent developments in health informatics to collect and access Big Data for research purposes. You will discuss different approaches for data analysis and learn how to visualize Big Data. The primary focus of this summer school lies in the area of Big Data for medical research purposes.
In modern health research, it is essential that all stakeholders are aware of the huge amounts of available information, also referred to as 'Big Data'. This information ranges from genetic information to electronic health records and high-resolution imaging data, but also includes data from e.g. social media, and medical devices. This interactive summer course will provide you with clear insights regarding the challenges and opportunities of Big Data in health research. For example, in biomedical sciences, researchers increasingly make new discoveries from Big Data, by pooling real-time data from multiple sources including electronic healthcare records in order to detect diseases at an early stage or to assess the effectiveness and efficacy of medical interventions.

Target audience
The target group of this course includes advanced BSc and MSc students in biomedical sciences with a basic understanding of epidemiology and (medical) statistics. However, participants from other disciplines with a genuine interest in Big Data for health research and a profound understanding of quantitative/mathematical methods are also welcome.
Course aim
This interactive summer course will provide students with clear insights regarding the challenges and opportunities of Big Data in health research.
