Deadline: May 01, 2019

Event Dates: from Aug 03, 2019 12:00 to Aug 10, 2019 12:00

Overview

Competitive goods are things which are such that if you have them then someone else does not. Examples include money, power and desire gratification. In contrast, shared goods are ways of interacting which are mutually beneficial. Examples include pursuing shared goals, building shared relationships (e.g. cameraderie, friendship and love), creating beauty, learning and teaching. We first explore the nature of shared goods, and then philosophical arguments for seeing them as ultimately best for a person. Subsequently we discuss how this can inform day-to-day decision-making. For example, in the areas of friendship, love, family, work and community.

Course aims

This course aims to deepen understanding of shared goods (e.g friendship, love, cooperation, truth, beauty), explore philosophical arguments for thinking they rather than competitive goods (e.g money, power, desire gratification) are really best for us, and discuss the implications for your day to day decision-making.

Teaching methods

All summer school courses are taught through group seminars and individual tutorials. Students also conduct private study when not in class and there is a well stocked library at OUDCE to support individual research needs.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students will be expected to understand:

  • the nature of shared goods and how they differ from competitive goods

  • the philosophical arguments for basing decision-making on the view that shared goods are what are truly best for a person.

  • how to apply this understanding of shared goods in decision-making.

And students will be expected to have gained and/or developed the following skills:

  • the ability to use ideas and arguments from the course when discussing and writing about what is best for a person.

  • the ability to use ideas and arguments from the course when making decisions.

  • the ability to think rationally and objectively

Assessment methods

Students are assessed during the summer school by either a 1500 word written assignment or a presentation supported by individual documentation. To successfully gain credit (10 CATS points) students should attend all classes and complete the on-course assignment. There is also a pre-course assignment of 1000 words set. Although this does not count towards credit, it is seen as an important way of developing a student's ideas and therefore its completion is mandatory.
