Overview

We will be looking at the key developments and developers of mathematics from the time of ancient Babylon and traversing through Egypt and the Greeks looking at the work of Pythagoras, Euclid and Archimedes along with their fascination with the primes. This will be followed by considering the contributions of Indian and Arab scholars and how they influenced the development of mathematics during the Enlightenment. We will also follow the 'footsteps' of many of the great 'Giants' of mathematics including those of: Newton, Gauss and Laplace.

Tutor

Dr Vasos Pavlika

Dr Vasos Pavlika is Senoir Teaching Fellow at University College London and also teaches at the LSE (University of London) as well as for the Department of Continuing Education, Cambridge University and online at SOAS, University of London. He has been a tutor in the Department for Continuing Education, Oxford for several years.

Course aims

The course aims to show that the development of mathematics was iterative and dependent on basic human needs.

Teaching methods

All summer school courses are taught through group seminars and individual tutorials. Students also conduct private study when not in class and there is a well stocked library at OUDCE to support individual research needs.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course students will be expected to understand:

  • the contribution of the Greeks to proof
  • that mathematics is a servant of science
  • that mathematics was created by a small number of great thinkers.

And students will be expected to have gained and/or developed the following skills:

  • an understanding of how to solve algebraic equations
  • an appreciation of the calculus
  • an understanding of many topics in applied mathematics.

Assessment methods

Students are assessed during the summer school by either a 1500 word written assignment or a presentation supported by individual documentation. To successfully gain credit (10 CATS points) students should attend all classes and complete the on-course assignment. There is also a pre-course assignment of 1000 words set. Although this does not count towards credit, it is seen as an important way of developing a student's ideas and therefore its completion is mandatory.

  • Payments:
    • Participants are required to pay the full fee within 30 days of the invoice date.

English Language Requirements

If English is not your first language you must supply suitable evidence (an original certificate that is not more than two years old and issued by a responsible body) that you have reached the Standard overall score, plus the additional requirement before you may be offered a place.
