University of Oslo Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biostatistics

Three postdoc positions, each for a period of three years, are available at the Oslo Centre for Biostatistics and Epidemiology (OCBE), Department of Biostatistics, University of Oslo. The Institute of Basic Medical Sciences consists of departments and units that pursue research and education within basic medical science. The institute has approximately 320 employees and is located in the Domus Medica.

This is an opportunity to join one of Europe's most active biostatistics groups at an exciting time. Currently, OCBE includes nine tenured professors and associate professors, twelve researchers, and several post-doctoral fellows and PhD students, making up a group of about 50. OCBE is internationally recognized, with interests spanning a broad range of areas (including time-to-event models, data integration, causal inference, statistical genomics, Bayesian inference, informative missingness and measurement error models, epidemiological studies of lifestyle and chronic diseases, stochastic models for infectious diseases, high dimensional data and models) and numerous collaborations with leading bio-medical research groups nationally and internationally.

The postdoc positions are funded by the Norwegian Research Council through the project “National training initiative to make better use of biobanks and health registry data – Statistical methods for biobanks and registries” (Principal investigator Professor Magne Thoresen), and the general purpose of the project is to develop new statistical methodology for the analysis of biobanks and health registries. The project is a collaboration between the University of Oslo, the University of Tromsø and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and successful candidates will have some training components jointly with postdoctoral fellows at the other universities.

Job Description

Two positions are in a project on high-dimensional data integration, developing methods for integration of different sources or layers of high-dimensional genomic information, in addition to other sources of structured data. For these two positions we are looking for candidates with a strong mathematical / statistical background. We particularly welcome candidates who have some experience with genomics. Primary responsible for these positions are Professors Magne Thoresen and Arnoldo Frigessi.

One position is in a project on causal inference and cancer epidemiology. The purpose of this project is to develop and implement methods for causal mediation analysis to study pathways through DNA methylation from various exposures to disease. Also here we are looking for candidates with a strong methodological background and preferably with some applied experience. Primary responsible for this position are Researcher Jon Michael Gran and Professor Marit Veierød.

All three candidates will be working on data from the Norwegian Women and Cancer study (NOWAC), a large cohort study that has been running for about 25 years (http://site.uit.no/nowac/).

In your application, please indicate which of the positions you are applying for.

Qualifications and Personal Skills:

Candidates must have a PhD in statistics/mathematics or related field equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree. Successful candidates must have defended their doctoral thesis prior to starting in this job.

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with an outstanding potential and a strong mathematical / statistical background and you will have conducted methodological research in statistics. Proven experience in programming is required. The ideal candidates are able to work effectively as part of a team, but also to develop and pursue independent ideas. The successful candidates are expected to conduct innovative research at the highest international level.

All fellowships are expected to start after summer 2016, but the starting date can be negotiated.
