ARENA Centre for European Studies at the University of Oslo (UiO) invites applications to fill a vacancy for a PhD fellowship (SKO 1017) within the field of political theory and/or public administration. The position is part of the research project ‘Democracy and Expert Rule: The Quest for Reflexive Legitimacy’ (REFLEX).

The appointment is for the duration of three years with no teaching obligations (pliktarbeid). The proposed starting date for the fellowship is 1 August 2017.

ARENA is a multidisciplinary research centre at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Oslo. The centre promotes theoretically oriented, empirically informed studies seeking to analyse the dynamics of the evolving European systems of governance.  It is renowned for its cutting edge research on the transformation of Europe, and coordinates and participates in numerous international research projects and networks, mainly funded by European and Norwegian research programmes. Its international staff is conducive to a vibrant and integrated research community, where the working language is English.

Description

The position forms part of the research project ‘Democracy and Expert Rule: The Quest for Reflexive Legitimacy’ (REFLEX), which is financed by the Research Council of Norway's FRIPRO Toppforsk grant. REFLEX studies expertise in European decision making; how it is practiced and whether it can be justified. REFLEX enquires into the legal, organizational and political parameters for authorizing and holding different depoliticized bodies, e.g., agencies and the European Central Bank, to account. The PhD fellow will be part of the research group led by Erik O. Eriksen at ARENA Centre for European Studies, which focuses on European depoliticized decision-making. The announced position is for a duration of three years, fully devoted to research with no duty work, leading to completion of a doctoral degree.

The candidate shall be expected to participate in ongoing research at ARENA, aiming at high quality international publications. ARENA is an integrated research centre, and it is therefore presupposed that the candidate takes an active part in the relevant research group and collaborates with other researchers at ARENA. The research fellow will be fully integrated in ARENA’s research activities and its international networks.

The position requires that the person who is employed participates in the Faculty of Social Sciences’ organised research education programme (PhD programme), and that their work results in a doctorate within the set fellowship period. The successful applicant will automatically be admitted to this PhD programme.

Desired qualifications and personal skills

Applicants must hold a master’s degree in a relevant discipline within the social sciences or law, which meets the requirements of enrolment in the PhD-programme. The master’s thesis must have been submitted before the application deadline. A prerequisite for taking up the position is the successful completion of a master’s degree.

In their application letter, applicants should describe their qualifications, research experience and research interests, and are encouraged to submit up to two examples of their written work, e.g. master’s thesis or published articles.

Applicants must further submit a project proposal of up to 5 pages outlining the research topic, the specific problems to be studied, empirical case selection, the choice of theory and method, and a timetable. It is presupposed that the candidate is able to complete the project within the set fellowship period. The applicant’s project proposal should be on the legitimacy of European agencies.

In assessing the candidates, particular emphasis will be placed on the quality and relevance of the project proposal, academic qualifications and on the quality of previous work. Potential candidates will be invited for an interview.
