Our fellowships
Our Anne McLaren and Nottingham Research Fellowship schemes will produce the next generation of outstanding research leaders.
We recognise the value and contribution of early career researchers in delivering our ambitious research vision, and are committed to recruiting 100 Nottingham and Anne McLaren Research Fellows by the end of 2020. This call forms the first stage of this process.

Anne McLaren Fellowships
Our Anne McLaren Fellowships are aimed at outstanding female scholars in science, technology, engineering and medicine at the early stage of their academic careers.
Nottingham Research Fellowships
The Nottingham Research Fellowships Scheme targets outstanding early career researchers in most academic disciplines at the University.
Fellowships will normally commence in October 2018, but there is individual flexibility around this date.
Eligibility
Candidates must have been awarded their PhD prior to the Expression of interest submission date, and should have no more than 8 years of post-doctoral experience following the award of their PhD. Career breaks such as maternity leave, EU national service, and Voluntary Service Overseas can be discounted, but teaching experience and/or time spent in industry since the award of a PhD should amount to no more than 96 months.
Candidates for the Anne McLaren Fellowships must be pursuing a career in a STEM subject. Female scholars are typically under-represented in STEM subjects and female applicants are strongly encouraged.
Candidates for the Nottingham Research Fellowships can be from any academic discipline across the University.
Candidates must demonstrate experience sufficient to confirm their ability to complete the proposed programme of work.
The University of Nottingham will act as sponsor for any candidate who does not have the right to work in the UK.
Candidates should be able to demonstrate:
- An outstanding track record of research including high-quality publications, research funding and/or prizes and awards
- Evidence of a growing reputation, both nationally and internationally
- An aptitude to lead and inspire others within the research team and institution more broadly
- Potential to act as an ambassador in their research field and more widely
Part-time appointments will be considered on a pro-rata basis.
Individuals who have been promised or already have a permanent position are considered to have achieved the aims of the scheme already.
What’s included?
Each fellowship offers:
- Three years independent funding, normally starting October 2018, to conduct research while based at The University of Nottingham
- Competitive salary between £28,982 and £46,414 (Level 4 or 5 R&T) dependent on experience
- The linking of the Fellowship to an indefinite academic post, subject to performance against a high-quality threshold and the continued right to work in the UK
- Additional funding for research expenses up to £25,000 per annum
- Additional childcare costs of up to £5000 per annum where appropriate
- Relocation expenses of up to £1500
- The opportunity to spend periods of time at The University of Nottingham campuses in Malaysia and China
- Participation in a mentoring scheme and career development programme
Subject to performance and meeting objectives defined in the Performance Development Review Process (PDPR) which reports to Research Board. Please check individual requirements with the school which you are applying to.
How to Apply
The application process for this scheme is a four-stage process.
- The first step requires candidates to make contact with the academic unit (school, department of faculty) where they are interested in applying. This is to help ensure that your Fellowship project can be supported. Contact details for each Faculty/School are provided in the contacts section. Please ensure you follow the appropriate instructions for each Faculty.
- The second stage is the submission of an Expression of Interest form (EOI), which provides a brief outline of the proposed project and details about the applicant. Forms must be submitted to the named contact in the host school/faculty. The deadline for expressions of interest is the 3rd November 2017.
- Alongside your expression of interest, you will also need to complete the following short application form for our records.
- Following review of the expression of interest submissions, short-listed applicants will be invited submit a full application. The deadline for full applications to be submitted to fellowships@nottingham.ac.uk will be 19 January 2018.
- Candidates will be notified in early March 2018 regarding invitations to attend an interview, likely to be mid March 2018.

Each academic unit has nominated a lead academic to act as the contact point for applicants. Contact details for each School/Faculty can be found in the contacts section. Please ensure you follow the appropriate instructions for each Faculty.
When submitting an EOI to the nominated lead, please mark your email “Name – NRF/AMF Expression of Interest submission”.
If you are applying for both schemes, please ensure that you indicate this on the EOI form, and mark your email NRF/AMF Expression of Interest submission.
