EpiDoc Workshop

The Institute of Classical Studies, University of London and Department of History and Cultures, Alma Mater Studiorum Università di Bologna invite applications for a one-week, online workshop in EpiDoc XML and digital epigraphy and papyrology. EpiDoc is a leading standard for the digital encoding of ancient inscriptions, papyri, and other primary and documentary texts in TEI XML for online publication and interchange. The workshop will cover the encoding of ancient texts in XML, sources of information and support on EpiDoc, and introduce the EFES platform for viewing and publishing EpiDoc editions.

The workshop will be held remotely online from April 12–16, 2021, and will involve asynchronous tutorials and exercises as well as real-time discussion and feedback sessions. All tuition will be in English, with the possibility of asking questions in Italian. No preexisting technical knowledge is required, but participants are expected to be familiar with the transcription conventions for inscriptions and papyri (“Leiden”), and either Greek, Latin or other ancient languages of their epigraphic tradition.

To apply for a place on this workshop, please send a brief explanation of your motivation for seeking EpiDoc training (including any projects you will work on) to gabriel.bodard@sas.ac.uk by February 21st, 2021. The fee is normally £100 for the week, but if you would like to request the unwaged rate of £50, please confirm that you have sought funding from your institution to cover the fees and that none is available. Applicants will be informed of acceptance on the workshop by the end of February.
