Working environment

As a bioinformatician (or prospective cardiologist) you want to matter. You really want to make a difference in the lives of people with a cardiovascular condition. Now and in the future. That is why you consciously choose to work as a bioinformatician in the Department of Cardiology of the UMCG, a dynamic department where research and clinical practice are intertwined. We translate problems that we experience in clinical practice into scientific research. We improve patient care with the results of our scientific research. We believe that providing talent room to develop, a solution can ultimately be found for every cardiovascular condition. As a bioinformatician (and / or PhD student), UMCG Cardiology therefore offers you plenty of opportunities to follow your interests and give your talent space.

Job description

From a shared ambition to be a leader in bioinformatics and artificial intelligence within the cardiological playing field, you give substance to your own work in which excellence is your intrinsic motivation. As a bioinformatician, you join the successful research line in ischemic heart disease and work on big data under the supervision of international experts in this field. The data includes large genetic data sets (including sequencing data) of >500,000 people and very large imaging (CT, MRI) data sets of >30,000 people. You work together as a team with other disciplines (including cardiologists, radiologists, epidemiologists and pharmacologists). The international network of the Department of Cardiology, UMCG allows you to collaborate with researchers from all over the world and international working visits and conferences are a logical derivative of this. You combine this with data-analytical support for clinicians working with clinical data and studies. This makes every day different and varied. Never a dull moment.

We are currently looking for an MSc with the following profile:

  • Focus area on complex genetics and artificial intelligence. You participate in the analysis of big data, you discover new leads for cardiovascular diseases, and you search for applications via eHealth applications.

As a bioinformatician you work together in a larger team with other bioinformatics / PhD students and there is a lot of interaction between the different areas of interest. An appointment as a PhD student is possible.

What do we need

  • You have completed an MSc on IT/bioinformatics.
  • You are interested and / or have experience with statistics and deep learning.
  • You are interested and / or have experience with genetic data.
  • You preferably have research experience, but this is not absolutely necessary.
  • You have excellent communication skills.
