PhD scholarship with a specialization in Green National Accounting at the Department of Economics, University of Copenhagen (UCPH)
The research project “Developing and Implementing Green National Accounts and the Green GDP” directed by Professors Jens Hoff, Peter Birch Sørensen and Jette Bredahl Jacobsen in collaboration with Statistics Denmark is offering one PhD scholarship funded by the KR Foundation and the Carlsberg Foundation. The scholarship is offered from 1 August 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter.
The project is a cooperative effort between researchers from Copenhagen University’s Department of Economics and the Department of Food and Resource Economics. The project will involve cooperation with the Green National Accounts department of Statistics Denmark. It will also involve interdisciplinary cooperation with a group of researchers from the Department of Political Science at Copenhagen University, who are studying the political, institutional and administrative barriers to Green National Accounting in Denmark.

The PhD programme provides PhD students with strong research training which opens up a window of opportunity to a variety of careers within the private and public sectors. The programme includes the drafting of a PhD thesis, active participation in research networks, PhD courses, and knowledge dissemination. The PhD programme must be undertaken as a three year full-time study within the framework of the 5+3 study programme of the Faculty of Social Sciences.
Applicants for the PhD scholarship must be willing to
- specialize in Environmental Economics with particular emphasis on the theory and practice of green national accounting, including methods of valuing environmental goods and estimating the Green Net National Product,
- engage in cooperation with Statistics Denmark with the purpose of further development of the Green National Accounts for Denmark,
- engage in interdisciplinary work with political scientists and natural scientists with the purpose of promoting the development and practical use of the Green National Accounts in Denmark,
- participate in the dissemination of the research findings from the project among potential public and private sector users as well as the wider public.
Qualifications and salary
In order to be eligible for a scholarship in the 5+3 PhD study programme in Economics the applicant must have completed a two year MSc degree programme in Economics, Environmental or agricultural economics or similar. Applicants should check the study programme for more detailed descriptions of the entry requirements. In particular, applicants must have completed relevant advanced courses within the core disciplines of macroeconomics, microeconomics and econometrics. PhD students are paid a salary in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The PhD student has a work obligation of up to 840 hours over the 3 year period of time without additional pay. The work obligation will include relevant work in the National Accounts Department at Statistics Denmark and dissemination of research findings.
The ideal candidate has a strong interest and experience in Environmental Economics, a solid academic performance during previous studies, a motivation to engage in theoretical as well as empirical work, and good oral and written communication skills. Some prior knowledge of Green National Accounting and of GIS will be an advantage, but not a prerequisite.
