ESRC South West Doctoral Training Centre Scholarships

The Universities of Bristol, Exeter and Bath have created the South West Doctoral Training Centre (SWDTC) which draws together the established research excellence of more than 770 academic and research staff at the three institutions. Together, these institutions present a distinctive cadre of social science research staff and students, with established international, national and regional networks, and widely recognised research excellence. As recognised research leaders, the three institutions have a strong track record in advancing knowledge through high quality research and teaching in partnership with business, the professions, the public services, the third sector and other research and learning providers.

The SWDTC receives a number of studentships from the ESRC each year to award to students on SWDTC pathways at the Universities of Bristol, Bath and Exeter. Students who apply to the University of Bristol will be primarily based in Bristol and will receive their award from the University of Bristol but those on interdiscipinary pathways may take classes or have co-supervisors at either Bath or Exeter.

Value of ESRC SWDTC studentships

Home tuition fees plus living expenses of the RCUK minimum per annum for UK students. EU students will receive a fees only award unless they can prove they meet the ESRC's eligibility guidelines and have been settled and resident in the UK for at least 3 years.

Eligibility

Students wishing to apply for ESRC funding can apply for either a Msc followed by PhD programme (1+3 award) or PhD only (+3 award). Students wishing to undertake PhD study only (+3 awards) must meet the ESRC criteria in terms of previous Masters level study and should read the SWDTC admissions statement (PDF, 304kB) for information.

You must apply to the PhD programme to be considered for 1+3 as well as +3 awards so that you can upload your PhD proposal to the application.

Students applying for ESRC funded scholarships are encouraged to look at ways of incorporating collaboration with external partners into their research proposal. Collaboration does not always have to be a financial arrangement and could take the form of a placement, voluntary work, data sharing or other payment in kind opportunities.

Applicants may apply to one or more pathways but please note the ESRC's eligibility criteria for overseas and EU students.
