University of Bath PhD Studentship: Welfare States in Transition
We welcome applications for a full-time three-year PhD University studentship commencing in October 2016 in the Institute for Policy Research and the Department for Social & Policy Sciences.
Background
The Institute for Policy Research (IPR) fosters inter-disciplinary research of international excellence and impact, add ressing major policy challenges at local, national and global levels.
The Department of Social & Policy Sciences is recognised internationally for the quality of research underfive key research themes.
The student will conduct their research under the supervision of Jane Millar and Nick Pearce. Jane Millar is Professor of Social Policy with research interests in social security and family policy, lone parents, employment and poverty. Nick Pearce is Professor of Public Policy and Director of the IPR, with research interests in social justice, welfare state and public service reform, and identity politics.
The project
Applications are welcome from well-qualified candidates with a research project that they are seeking to develop.
We would welcome projects that would complement work in IPR. This could be on the following issues:
- comparative analysis of the political economy of welfare states and the effects of austerity on different welfare state regimes
- comparative analysis of the performance of social investment or ‘new welfare’ state strategies
- developments in Universal Basic Income theory and practice, and the relationship of these to social protection policies
- developments in family policy and social security (projects with a focus on gender are of particular interest)
The successful candidate should:
- fulfil the entrance requirements for a Department of Social & Policy Sciences PhD
- have knowledge and understanding of social policy research and current issues
- have some background in quantitative or qualitative methods as appropriate for the project
- have an interest in public policy engagement and policy impact
The award
The successful candidate will be supported for three years, which will include:
- a £14,296 (2016/17 rate) per-annum stipend
- Home/EU tuition fees
- annual Training Support Grant
