Summer Artist-in-Residence Programs in Canada

The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery Division supports, along with its partners, a series of Summer Artist-in-Residence programs. The Summer Residencies at Gros Morne National Park and Terra Nova National Park are offered in partnership with Parks Canada. They are open to Canadian and international professional visual artists, working in any media, and whose work reflects or draws on the natural environment:

Gros Morne National Park

The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery Division and Parks Canada are pleased to offer a summer residency program at Gros Morne National Park on Newfoundland and Labrador’s west coast. With the assistance of The Canada Council for the Arts, the program provides an artists’ honoraria and Parks Canada will assist with living accommodations/work space.
 
Provincial/national/international artists can apply for stays of 3 - 6 weeks. Some element of public access must be provided weekly ̶ slide talk, “open studio”, or workshop to be determined with Parks Canada. Five artists will be selected for the residencies. Artists should provide their preferred length of stay, and two choices of time frame between May and October, 2016.

NOTE: Artist is responsible for their own transportation. A vehicle is highly desirable.

Terra Nova National Park

The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery Division and Parks Canada are pleased to offer a summer residency program at Terra Nova National Park on Newfoundland and Labrador’s east coast. With the assistance of The Canada Council for the Arts we will provide artists’ honoraria and Parks Canada will assist with living accommodations. There is no formal work space.

Provincial/national/international artists can apply for stays of 3 - 6 weeks. Some element of public access must be provided weekly ̶ slide talk, “open studio” or workshop to be determined with Parks Canada. Four artists will be selected for the residencies. Artists should provide their preferred length of stay, and two choices of time frame between May and October, 2016.

NOTE: Artist is responsible for their own transportation. A vehicle is highly desirable.

And one community-based residency, also open to Canadian and international professional visual artists, working in any media, whose work reflects or draws on the natural environment or whose interests are appropriate to the cultural and historical aspects of the location:

Landfall Trust, Brigus

The Landfall Trust, a non-profit committee in charge of an historic house in Brigus (the house where Rockwell Kent stayed during WWI) has become a co-sponsor with The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery to offer an artist-in-residency program in Brigus, Conception Bay, Newfoundland. The Brigus committee, as co-sponsor, will be the contact for living at the house and interacting with the community. The Canada Council for the Arts will be the sponsor for funding the artists’ honoraria. Provincial/national/international artists can apply for a stay of 3 weeks beginning the end of June and the first 2 weeks of July, 2016.

CHECKLIST:
Applications should include:

  • Current curriculum vitae, including exhibition record
  • 10 to 15 visual-work examples - jpeg format DVD, CD (image 300 dpi).
  • Short statement of interest and a description of work to be carried out during the residency.  The applicant should also describe why she/he wishes to do the residency, and what particular perspective he/she will bring to the program
  • Indication of public access programming to be offered by the artist, for the public at large and for young people
  • Preferred length of stay, and two choices of time frame between May and October, 2016
  • Two artists may make a joint application, each submitting visuals and other information, if they are prepared to share the honorarium and living/working space.  These are working residencies; family and friends cannot accompany artists.
