Ph.D. in Engineering: Optimisation for novel material for additive manufacturing (PhD Studentship)
About
Project title: Optimisation for novel material for additive manufacturing
This Ph.D. project will develop a numerical method for tailoring material properties. The material properties may be metamaterial (i.e. material that does not exist in nature such as cloaking material or negative stiffness material) or smart material (i.e. morphs or changes shapes as a result of external stimulus). They can be achieved by optimizing the shape of a periodic material structure and making the material using additive manufacturing techniques. The project is primarily numerical and computational in nature with an interest in finite element and/or PDE systems and a keen enthusiasm to learn engineering optimization based on multivariable calculus. The primary tasks will be conducted by programming in C/C++.
This Ph.D. is placed in an active research group located at Cardiff University and UC San Diego and will require traveling between the two institutions. Please note that the degree-awarding institution and primary base will be Cardiff University.
Working collaboratively and co-operating with the research group and external collaborators will be essential to the success of the project.

Supervisors: Dr. H Alicia Kim
Start date: 01 October 2015
Number of Studentships: 1
Funding
This studentship consists of full UK/EU tuition fees, as well as a Doctoral Stipend matching UK Research Council National Minimum (£14,057 p.a. for 2015/16, updated each year).
One studentship is available.
Eligibility
Residency: This studentship is open to students of any nationality. Students classified as international for fee purposes have to self-fund the difference between home and international fees.
Academic criteria: Applicants for a studentship must have obtained, or be about to obtain, a good 2:1 degree or higher in an MEng degree and/or an appropriate Master’s level qualification (or their equivalent) in a relevant subject area (Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics)
How to Apply
In the first instance, you should submit a CV & Covering Letter to Miss J Cleaver at engineering-pgr@cardiff.ac.uk. Please ensure that you quote the studentship reference 'ENG-HAK-2015/1' in the email subject field. The successful candidate will then be invited to submit a standard application for Postgraduate Study via the Online Application Service.
The deadline for applications is 25 September 2015.
Cardiff University reserves the right to close applications early should sufficient applications be received.
Further Information
Application inquiries should be directed to engineering-pgr@cardiff.ac.uk.
