PHD (VIA MPHIL) STUDENTSHIP IN ENGINEERING

Applications are invited for a partially funded studentship for a full time PhD (via MPhil) studentship in Intelligent Machines and maintenance Engineering in the School of Engineering.  The studentship is tenable for up to 3 years full-time [subject to satisfactory progress] and will cover the cost of tuition fees at UK/EU rates and a partial maintenance grant of £3000 per annum. International applicants may apply but will be required to pay the difference in tuition fees.  It is expected the successful applicant will start on 1st July 2017.

Project Title

Next Generation of Wind turbine Gearboxes; Intelligent Wind turbine Gearbox

Project Description

Wind turbine gearboxes play a major role in wind turbine performance and power generation. In order to improve their efficiency and reliability under different operating conditions, it is necessary for wind turbine components to operate efficiently, and with increased reliability. This project will focus on developing an intelligent gearbox for the wind turbine industry, by integrating sensors, intelligent electronics and actuators to develop an “Intelligent Gearbox”. The project include wireless communication via the “internet of things” to allow data to be collected from a remotely sited operating system. This combination of capability would be a significant advantage for critical gearbox applications in remote locations e.g. off shore wind turbines locations, which would enable cost-effective operation and proactive maintenance practices.
