PhD Fellowship in Human Computer Interaction with Body-Based User Interfaces 2017, University of Copenhagen, Denmark

Publish Date: Mar 27, 2017

Deadline: Mar 30, 2017

PhD student in Human Computer Interaction with Body-Based User Interfaces at University of Copenhagen

At the Human Centered Computing section we are exploring ways in which we can use our body when interacting with computers. Examples include

  • Body Configuration: body pose as a feedback mechanism in virtual reality, and full-body gestural interaction systems
  • Motion of the Body: movement as a feedback mechanism using electro-muscle stimulation and movement as a form of perception in haptic feedback.
  • Body Surface: exploring methods and design principles for using the skin as an input and output space
  • Inside the Body: designing systems that mediate the feedback process between cognitive and physical phenomena as well as exploring feedback mechanisms that are experienced internally to the body

We are searching for a PhD student interested in pushing the boundaries of Human Computer Interaction with us.

You will be working on the project Body-UI, awarded by the European Research Council for five years to Kasper Hornbæk. The project combines results and methods from research on embodied cognition with recent advances in technologies for body-based UIs. We seek to understand the effect of body-based UIs on users’ thinking and on their experiences of interactive systems. We demonstrate such effects in controlled studies as well and by designing and prototyping body-based interactive systems.

Why do a PhD in Copenhagen?

The Human-Centered Computing section at the University of Copenhagen offers a research environment with much freedom: to a large extent, you shape the research you work on and the ideas you pursue. Our section aspires to be a top research environment for human-computer interaction that bridges technology, theory, and empirical studies: we had eight papers at CHI 2016 (including two best paper awards), four papers at CHI 2015, and best paper awards at DIS 2014 and AVI 2014. Currently, three post docs and two PhD students work on BODY-UI.

Qualifications

* Master degree in Computer Science, Human–computer Interaction, Psychology, Cognitive Science, Physiology, Biomechanics, or related field.

* Skills in developing or evaluating body-based UIs, for instance on-body touch, mid-air gestures, motion-tracking, proxemics interaction, etc.

* Strong programming skills

* Proficiency in English, both in speaking and writing.

Additionally, candidates need to stand out in at least one of the following key criteria of excellence used for the assessment:

* Grades that document an outstanding academic record

* Scientific publication(s) in recognized, peer-reviewed venues

* Awards and honors

* Professional qualifications and work experience

Terms of salary and employment

Terms of appointment and payment are in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Federation of Professional Associations (AC). The starting salary for candidates with an MSc degree will be a minimum of DKK 309.109 (April 2016 level) plus pension contribution, with the possibility of salary negotiation.

The scholarship requires a Master's degree in computer science or a field providing equivalent qualifications (see above), at the time of taking up the position. The appointment is for a period of 3 years and is expected to lead to a PhD dissertation. The scholarship can be commenced as of June 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The University of Copenhagen wishes to reflect the diversity of society and welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.

Submission of application

The application must be submitted electronically by clicking “APPLY NOW” below. The application MUST contain the following:

  • Letter of motivation (max. two pages) that includes a description of how the qualifications are met
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Master thesis as PDF (final or in draft)
  • Assessment of master thesis (provisional or final)
  • Two references that we may contact
  • Transcripts of grades, documenting an outstanding academic record. Unless the candidate’s diploma and transcripts of grades are in Danish or English, the candidate should procure a certified translation. Furthermore, the candidate must include official information about the grading scale.
  • PDFs of any scientific publications that you have co-authored.

The deadline for applications is March 30 2017 (Midnight CET). Late applications are not considered.

Procedures and shortlisting

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Interview Committee. All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment by an expert assessment committee. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee and each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant himself/herself.

The final selection of successful candidates will be made by the Head of Department, based on the recommendations of the assessment committee. Successful candidates will then be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD school of the Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen.
