Tanaka Junior Research Fellowship in Japanese Studies

Pembroke College wishes to appoint a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) in Japanese Studies of any area, discipline or period. Whilst the field of study is open, candidates are expected to be able to conduct research using Japanese sources. The appointment will be from 1 September 2017 for three years.

The Tanaka JRF in Japanese will be expected to conduct original research in their chosen field and to contribute to the development of Japanese studies at Pembroke College. Optionally, and by agreement with the Fellow in Japanese, they may provide undergraduate teaching, participate in admissions and supervise undergraduate dissertations. The JRF will also be expected to engage with the community of scholars and students in Japanese across the University and will assist with the organisation of the Tanaka Lecture Series/Tanaka Symposium in Japanese studies.

Applicants should either have completed their PhD or be close to completion (and will need to have submitted their doctorate before taking up the fellowship) and preference will be given to applicants who have not already held a postdoctoral fellowship, JRF or tenured academic post. Selection criteria will be based on the candidate’s overall academic record, quality and achievement of research, research plans, academic fit with the college fellowship and suitability for an academic career.

Applications should be submitted by email to academic.office@pmb.ox.ac.uk by 12.00 midday on Monday 6 February 2017 and should include:

  • A letter of application explaining why you wish to be considered for this position;
  • A curriculum vitae setting out details of your higher education, research and any publications to date;
  • A 1,000 word research proposal; and
  • The names, positions, postal addresses and email addresses of three academic referees. The referees will only be contacted to request a reference if your application is shortlisted.

The stipend for the role is £22,800 p.a. and a housing allowance of £7,200 p.a. is also payable. College accommodation may be provided in lieu of the housing allowance, subject to availability. Benefits include a research allowance of £1,545 p.a. (at the discretion of the college) and all lunches and dinners when the college kitchens are open. N.B. The stipend and allowances are based on 2016-17 rates and may be revised for 2017-18 and subsequent years.

The college is an Equal Opportunities Employer. Applications are particularly welcome from women and black and minority ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford.
