Newcastle University Business School Peter and Norah Lomas PhD Scholarships in Economics
This scholarship is funded by a gift to the University by alumnus, Mr Peter Lomas.
The scholarship is offered as a three year PhD studentship for a full time student undertaking a PhD in economics and starting their studies in 2016/17. This studentship is available to someone with a strong background and a research focus in one of the following areas of Economics:
- Applied econometrics
- Applied microeconomics, including industrial, regional and public economics
- Banking, empirical finance and risk management
- Financial markets, insurance and behavioural finance
- Health, risk, safety, environmental and experimental economics
- Labour market economics and applications
- Macroeconomics, trade, FDI and international economics.
Value of the Award and Eligibility
The studentship will cover PhD fees at the home/UK rate and a level of subsistence equal to that provided by ESRC studentships (estimated rate of £14,057 in 2016/17). Applicants of UK/EU and International status can apply.
The holder of the studentship may have the opportunity to undertake a small amount of teaching within the School. Payment for this will be at a standard hourly rate in addition to the annual studentship.
Person Specification
Applicants should have a good Honours degree (first-class or upper-second-class Honours) in an area related to the proposed field of study. It would be an advantage if you also had, or expected to receive by Autumn 2016, a Master’s-level qualification at ‘credit’ or ‘distinction’ level in a relevant subject area.

You should submit a full and detailed CV, an outline research proposal of around 1,000 – 2,000 words, and a personal statement of around 500 words setting out your reasons for applying.
You also need to submit your degree transcripts and certificates.
Applicants are encouraged to approach a member of staff relevant to their research area in the first instance, to discuss their interests, and with a view to working-up their outline proposal.
