The Master’s programme (38.04.08) in Finance (MiF) provides training for both professionals in financial and risk management, and for scholarly researchers in the area of finance.

The Finance Master’s programme at HSE St. Petersburg’s School of Economics and Management prepares highly qualified and competitive specialists for careers in the financial sector. This programme is certified by the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA) in the field of Financial Management. Students receive training that is in accordance with international standards recognized by professional associations including ACCA, PRMIA (Professional Risk Manager), and GARP (Financial Risk Manager). The programme is part of the IMESS consortium of universities headed by University College London (UCL).

The programme focuses on creating and developing competencies in financial management and risk-management for financial institutions and non-financial companies.The main emphasis is on contemporary theory and modern practices in corporate finance and risk management. At the same time, the programme provides fundamental knowledge in the broad area of finance that ensures our graduates are prepared for a diversity of  career pathways, including in, the real sector of the economy, banks, investment funds, consulting companies, insurance companies and elsewhere. The focus on research-based teaching, delivered through a combination of student research projects, internship opportunities, dissertation work and taught courses also equips students for entry into an academic career via a PhD programme.

The programme is designed to serve different types of students. For graduates in Economics or Finance, the programme is an ideal opportunity to continue and deepen their studies, but it is also suitable for strong students with a previous background in other subject disciplines. We incorporate ‘adaptation’ modules that are designed specifically for helping the transition from other disciplines into the finance sphere.

The programme has been thoughtfully designed through a process of collaborative work between researchers and practitioners in the area of Finance and has involved international benchmarking, incorporation of best practice and understanding how best to exploit the local comparative advantages. It complies with the Law of the Russian Federation on Education and, through this, a set of educational and professional standards, regulations and other approved documents of the federal and institutional levels. It is also aligned to international standards and requirements, including the European Qualifications Framework (EQF).

How to Apply

There are three application rounds. We encourage you to apply as soon as you feel that your application is ready. Please note that only applications received in the first and second rounds (by May 1, 2017) will be considered for scholarship funding.

   1. Create a Profile on the official website

On HSE’s online application form, click “Get login and password”. You will be asked to enter your personal details (full name, date of birth, gender, email address, and mobile phone number) and what type of programme you are applying to.

Your login and password will then be sent to the email address that you have provided.

 2.Log In

Once you have received the email containing your login and password, you can return to the online application form and log in.

3.Complete Application Form

After logging in, you will immediately see the application form. Please fill out the form. There are several attachments that you should be ready to upload: 

a)     Scan of the first page of your passport
b)     Abstract of your undergraduate thesis
c)      Scan of your diplomas and academic transcripts (if you have not yet received your Bachelor’s diploma, please include an official copy of your most recent academic transcript)
d)     Letter of motivation (describing your reasons for applying in the context of your long-term career goals and background, 500 words)
e)     Resume/CV (including information about your education, professional, and research experience, as well as language proficiency and other skills)
f)      Exam results confirming language proficiency (optional)

Please upload all attachments as PDF files and include your last name in the filename (for example, Smith_Diploma.pdf)

 Under “Field of study”, please select the two programmes that you wish to apply to. Your first choice and second choice programmes must be different. To select a programme, click on the box so that it turns green and the list collapses. Several programmes offer full tuition scholarships. If the “Tuition-free (quota) education” box is already checked, it means that if you apply to this programme you will automatically be considered for a full-tuition scholarship. If you would consider studying at HSE without the support of a full-tuition scholarship, please check the “Tuition-based” box.  If the “Tuition-free (quota) education” box is not checked, this means that full-tuition scholarships are not available for this programme.

 When you have fully completed the application form, click “Submit application” at the bottom of the form. Please note that this action is final and cannot be reversed, so make sure that you have correctly entered all of your information. After you have submitted your application, you will see the following message: “Congratulations! Your application has been successfully submitted and is currently pending review.”

4.  English Language test

Applicants are to pass the English Language test as a part of admission procedure.  Exempt from this requirement are those who

  • Would hold degrees from university programmes taught in English or    
  • Would provide certificates of major international language proficiency tests (TOEFL, ILTC, etc.).

Scholarships

Tuition-free scholarships are awarded to highly qualified applicants to this programme. All applicants will automatically be considered for tuition-free scholarships.

General Requirements for Graduate Admissions and Eligibility 

  • On-line application submitted before the deadline for 2017 intake
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent recognized by the Russian Federation and duly legalized (if applicable)
  • Meeting language proficiency requirements:
specific English language proficiency requirements for English-taught programmes (see portfolio description for minimal requirements and waivers)
Russian language proficiency for Russian-taught programmes (high proficiency in Russian is required and is checked during the interview)
  • Successfull portfolio competition, incl. an interview with programme's selection committee
  • Completing required enrollment procedures (arriving to St. Petersburg, signing study contract and paying the first tuition fee installment) by August, 28 at latest
