Program’s general structure

The study plan for the Master in International Advocacy is based on a series of common modules, which encompass seven credits of soft skills subjects, as well as common contents. The latter entail a total of 21 credits, split in six subjects. Students will have to enroll in both soft skills and the common contents.

These common contents provide knowledge and skills that will be of use in the more specialized courses, which are grouped in intensification modules, with a total of 18 credits, which will enable the students to choose one out of the three pre-defined paths that are offered as specialized content: Transactional, Dispute Resolution, and Public Law and Human Rights.

The structure of the Master also includes internships and a Master's Project with a highly practical approach, which will consist in participating in an international moot court, or an international case study.

Requirements

The main admission requirements to the Master's degree in International Advocacy are to have obtained, or to be in the process of obtaining, prior to commencement of classes, a degree in law or any other degree attesting to their having acquired  the skills and competence established in article 3 of the Regulation on the Law 34/2006 of 30 October on access to the professions of lawyer and court procedural representative, approved by RD 775/2011 of 3 June.

Foreign students

Once admitted to the Master, foreign students with university degree issued by a higher education institution belonging to an educational system outside the EEES, must present, for enrollment, the diploma attesting equivalent training that allows access to postgraduate studies, legalized by diplomatic procedures, or “The Hague Convention Apostille”

Scholarships

For the academic year 2017-18 has been published a call for a maximum of 5 grants for payment of the net enrollment rates for students accepted into the Master, with the following provision:

  • 3 grants of € 1,500
  • 2 grants of € 3,000

Application deadline: 31st May 2017.

Resolution: June 2017.


The number of grants and amounts specified in the Annex to the notice, may vary depending on the conditions of the candidates who apply to them, can be even deserted as assessed by the Selection Committee for each program.

MOOT MADRID-PCA SCHOLARSHIP

An agreement was concluded with the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague (PCA-CPA) to offer an internship in Its seat in The Hague for a period of twelve months to a student of the Master in International Advocacy. Currently, only higher education institutions specifically selected by the PCA benefit from this program:  Yale (USA), McGill (Canada), Max Planck Institute in Heidelberg and the National University of Singapore (NUS), to which we must add the UC3M

The PCA, one of the most important arbitral institutions in the World, was created by an International Treaty in 1899. It is an Intergovernmental body offering a variety of dispute resolution services to the international community. Importance Of special importance is its role in State-to-State arbitrations, or disputes concerning the Energy Charter Treaty, or the UN Convention on Law of the Sea, as well as its role as nominating authority in arbitrations under the Arbitration Rules of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law, which entails on many occasions its participation in investment and commercial arbitrations. 

The chosen candidate will receive some financial support, and will begin her service around the month of September at the PCA's International Office in her capacity as an "Assistant Legal Counsel" under the supervision of the Chief Legal Counsel, and Deputy Secretary General. The candidate will have the opportunity to assist the PCA lawyers in conducting important arbitration cases.
