Lancaster University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences MA Scholarships

Innovative thinking on language and cognition, language and society, and second language learning and teaching. A history of ground-breaking contributions to literacy studies, and language testing and assessment. A global leader in corpus studies and cutting-edge research in forensic linguistics. The Department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster is one of the largest in the UK and is listed 13th for Linguistics in the QS World University rankings. The postgraduate students who receive bursaries from the Department of Linguistics and English Language not only learn from but also contribute to the intellectual life of this dynamic research community. Applications are invited for the following Master's awards for 2016-17. All awards are open to applicants for any of our MA programs (campus-based and by distance) who meet the relevant residence criteria.

Departmental MA Scholarships (fees only)

Number of bursaries: 1
Eligibility: Open to UK/EU applicants only
Deadline: 25 March 2016

A number of MA fees-only bursaries are available for students wishing to study for a Master's degree within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Recipients will need to meet their general living expenses themselves.

Award criteria: The scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis. Candidates for a scholarship will be ranked based on the following criteria:

  1. Academic ability (as evidenced by academic record and references)
  2. Suitability for the program applied for
  3. Commitment to scholarship in the relevant field(s)
  4. Potential for contribution to scholarship and society more generally

Faculty MA Scholarships (fees only)

Number of bursaries: 1
Eligibility: Open to Overseas (non-UK/EU) applicants only
Deadline: 25 March 2016

The bursary takes the form of a fee waiver for the duration of an individual’s Master's studies. This bursary is open to full- and part-time students and is limited to non-Home/EU students.

Award criteria: The scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis. Candidates for a scholarship will be ranked based on the following criteria:

  1. Academic ability (as evidenced by academic record and references)
  2. Suitability for the programme applied for
  3. Commitment to scholarship in the relevant field(s)
  4. Potential for contribution to scholarship and society more generally

Geoffrey Leech Scholarship (fees only)

Number of bursaries: 1
Eligibility: Open to UK/EU applicants only
Deadline: 25 March 2016

The Geoffrey Leech Scholarship is only open to UK/EU applicants. The value of the award will be equivalent to the UK/EU tuition fees. This scholarship for MA study was set up by the Department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster to mark the retirement of Professor Geoffrey Leech. Geoff Leech is one of our most eminent and long-serving colleagues, and internationally renowned for his pioneering work in modern English grammar, stylistics, pragmatics, and corpus linguistics. As co-author of the Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language and the Longman Grammar of Spoken and Written English, he is one of the foremost authorities on the English language. The scholarships are for study on any of the MA programs on any of our MA programs, both campus-based and by distance.

The scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis. Candidates for a scholarship will be ranked based on the following criteria:

  1. Academic ability (as evidenced by academic record and references)
  2. Suitability for the program applied for
  3. Commitment to scholarship in the relevant field(s)
  4. Potential for contribution to scholarship and society more generally
  5. Financial need. Please include enough detail about your financial situation to allow the Department to assess your need. All applications will be treated confidentially.

The Peel Trust Studentship

The Peel Studentship Trust was established in 1964, by donations from the Dowager Countess Eleanor Peel Trust. The awards are available for the support of students for first or higher degrees, in any subject. The period of the award is one academic year, although students can apply each year. The value of the award is determined by the Trustees in each case, up to an individual maximum of £2500.

Alumni Loyalty Scholarship

Lancaster University will offer a reduction in tuition fees to all taught Master’s programs for eligible applicants, determined by the level of undergraduate award achieved. The value of the scholarship is a 20% fee reduction for 1st Class Hons degree holders, 10% fee reduction for 2:1 Hons degree holders.

To be eligible for the Alumni Loyalty Scholarship you must either:

  • Hold an undergraduate degree from Lancaster University (achieved at any time) or
  • Have graduated from one of our partner institutions (LU Ghana; Sunway University Malaysia; Goenka Institution India; or COMSATS Pakistan) or
  • Have studied at Lancaster University via our Study Abroad program
