Post-Doctoral Fellow Program

The Israel Institute Post-Doctoral Fellow Program provides financial support to newly-minted scholars in the field of Israel Studies who have invitations at top-tier universities. Our program enables the most promising recent doctoral graduates to conduct and publish research, engage in public events, make connections, and receive mentoring while they prepare for tenure-track university positions in the field of Israel Studies.

Post-Doctoral Fellows pursue an active agenda of academic book and/or peer-reviewed journal publication (in English), conference participation, and public event speaking.

To be awarded a Post-Doctoral Fellowship, applicants must complete their doctoral degrees prior to September 1 (when the Fellowship begins), have a dissertation about modern Israel, plan to maintain Israel as their research focus in the future, and have an unfunded or under-funded invitation to an elite university.

Strong applications will demonstrate an interest in and a long-term commitment to studying contemporary Israel, as well as show promise in securing tenure-track university positions in the United States. Promising candidates will have juried conference papers in English at national or international scholarly conventions and the ability to publish a book or in peer-reviewed publications in English.

Post-Doctoral Fellows are awarded up to $60,000 for the academic year. Please note that Fellows are not employees of the Israel Institute. Post-Doctoral Fellows should plan to cover all expenses including, but not limited to, living expenses, taxes, health insurance, travel expenses, visa fees, bench fees, etc. A second year of funding is available to Israel Institute Post-Doctoral Fellows subject to available funding and provided they meet explicit criteria (as written in the award letter) for publishing and speaking.

To be selected for this fellowship, applicants must have secured invitations from top-tier colleges or universities.

Post-Doctoral Fellows must agree to our list of commitments.

This program has a multi-part application process. Please note that this is a selective program, and the Israel Institute does not guarantee placement to those who apply.

The next deadline for applications is January 16, 2018.
