Diversity and Empire: The Habsburg Monarchy in the "long" 19. Century. Practice – Models – Comparisons
Call for applications
The Eberhard Karls University Tübingen, Germany, the Babeş-Bolyai Universität Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and the Eötvös Loránd University Budapest, Hungary, invite graduate and postdoctoral students to participate in a Summer Academy on diversity in the Habsburg Monarchy in the "long" 19. Century.
The Summer Academy is the result of several years of triangle cooperation between these universities especially in the fields of history and cultural studies. The summer academy on diversity in South Eastern Europe in Tübingen will be continued in 2017 and 2018 in Budapest and Cluj-Napoca with the temporal focus on the interwar and World War II period, and also on the Cold war era and the EU enlargement process as well.
The Topic
The main focus of the three Summer Academies is directed on the particular experiences of the Danube Region with ‘diversities’ from a historical perspective – understood not as a problem, but one of the regions advantages. It is structured by key notes of distinguished scholars, presentations of current research projects and work conducted in small groups on texts and essential literature connected to the fields of these key notes and presentations.
The 2016 summer academy in Tübingen will cover the following topics: ‘Empire’ as a paradigm in recent historiography, terms, theories and analytical tools for reaching diversity, introduction and special questions and diversity in law, state and public administration, churches and confessional structures as a core of ‘recognised’ diversity, majorities and minorities in urban culture, the impact of growing mobility and migrations, ‘performing identity’ within nationalism and political movements.
How to Apply
Applicants are expected to send a CV and a letter of motivation. Proposals for research presentations in the mentioned fields are welcome, but not mandatory. The selected participants will receive a reader with introducing texts to prepare them in advance. The languages used at the summer academy are English and German. Next to travel amounts, all participants are provided with free accommodation and food during their stay in Tübingen. The results of the summer academy will be presented online.
