ADVANCED INTELLECTRUAL PROPERTY COURSE

European and US IP Law and Practices

 The Intellectual Property Summer Academy covers various topics in intellectual property law at an advanced level. Topics include trademarks and copyrights, as well as issues related to unfair competition and trade secrets. Instruction is through classroom lectures, interactive discussions and case studies.

Topics include but are not limited to:

  • Filing and registering a trademark (procedure, duration and costs)
  • Trademark use requirement for foreign applicants and abandonment
  • Recent developments in European Union Trademark Law
  • Counterfeiting and seizures by the U.S. Customs Service
  • Copyright law: Subject matter; exclusive rights; registration benefits and procedure; term of protection; filing and registration costs
  • Copyright protection of software (including websites and mobile applications): strengths and weaknesses
  • Remedies for IP infringement (damages, attorney's fees, injunctions); criminal prosecution

Speakers include:

Susan M. Richey is Deputy Chief Judge of the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Judge Richey served as a professor and Associate Dean at the University of New Hampshire School of Law. Prior to her 18-year tenure as an IP professor and law school administrator, she spent 13 years in the private practice of intellectual property law in LA. She has also served worked for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Ms. Richey has been a frequent speaker on IP issues and has authored a large number of law review articles and other papers.

Ashlyn J. Lembree is Clinical Professor and Director of the Intellectual Property and Transaction Clinic at UNH School of Law's Franklin Pierce Center for Intellectual Property. With more than 15 years in practice, Mrs. Lembree has extensive knowledge about integrating intellectual property issues into the needs of business law clients. Prior to joining the University of New Hampshire School of Law, she practiced intellectual property law, general business law, and litigation at New Hampshire firms. Professor Lembree also teaches Federal Trademark and Copyright Registration Practice.

Heather J. Meeker is partner at O'Melveny Law Firm. Her practice focuses on counseling in the areas of Technology transactions, including licenses, channel sales agreements, development agreements, university technology transfer, and consumer contracting; open source software licensing; copyright, patent, trademark, trade secret, and other IP matters. Prior to joining O'Melveny, Mrs. Meeker practiced at an AmLaw 20 firm, where she served as chair of the firm's IP/IT Licensing and Transactions Group, while also co-managing shareholder of its Silicon Valley office.

The Intellectual Property Summer Academy is organized by the American University of Armenia & Intellectual Property Rights Center of Armenia and Sponsored by the Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP) of the US Department of Commerce.

A limited number of scholarships are available for applicants from developing countries. To qualify, please send a letter explaining your unique situation in detail to AUA Extension at extension@aua.amor the Intellectual Property Rights Center at info@ipr-center.org.

Enrollment: To enroll in AUA Extension courses, please go through the following steps (see below for the Armenian version):

  • Visit im.aua.am.
  • Create an account by clicking New User Registration.
  • If you are not a new user and already have an AUA account (having previously taken the AUA e-Math Test or applied to AUA), you should log into the account that you had created at that time.
  • If you just registered as a new user, you will get an email asking to activate your account.
  • Now, for registering to take a course, choose the Extension tab, then Extension Applications, and apply for the course(s) you choose.
  • After you register online, your application will be reviewed and you will receive an email acknowledging your application.
  • Closer to the course start date, you will receive another email confirming your enrollment, requesting that you make payment before the course start date. The fee can be paid online via credit card or through the tandem machine (located at the entrance to AUA). Alternatively, you may pay the fee via bank transfer to American University of Armenia Fund, account 001-006402-001, HSBC Bank Armenia, indicating your full name (as in the registration) and the course you are paying for.
  • The completed application together with the record of payment completes your enrollment.
