FORCE11 Communications Fellowship 2017-2018

The FORCE11 Organization seeks applicants for its 2017-2018 Communications fellowship program.

The FORCE11 is seeking applications from individuals who will implement the communication needs of the community. We are seeking candidates who wish to develop a deeper knowledge of Scholarly Communications as well as gain experience in social media and communications. The applicants may be do the work remotely from any location with an internet connection.  Working on a small team, fellows will write news releases, blog posts, and announcements about FORCE11, its constituent organizations, and the broader community; monitor and update FORCE11’s social media presence; assist in maintaining its website; help to develop and implement FORCE11’s outreach strategy; and perform other communications-related responsibilities (details can be found below). The Communications fellow should anticipate spending approximately 4 hours per week on the position (times may vary depending on the activities).

The fellowship year will run from May 1, 2017 through April 30, 2018.  

Fellows will receive free registration, airfare, accommodations and meals to attend the FORCE2017 Conference in Berlin, October 25-27, 2017 or the FORCE11 Scholarly Communications Institute in San Diego, CA.

This fellowship program is well-suited for - but not limited to - graduate students who wish to develop deeper knowledge of Scholarly Communications, gain experience in social media and communications.  The work will be conducted remotely through the internet.

We are offering two areas of expertise: 

TECHNICAL COMMUNICATIONS INNOVATION FELLOW

Description: This fellowship aims to develop implementation strategies of community outcomes, such as tools and ideas, in the context of Force11 website and other contexts. This person will be involved in both technical implementation as well as requirements gathering from the Force11 Working groups, advisory and executive boards, projects, and the Force11. Some of the project will also focused on both maintaining and innovating on some of the more mundane activities, such as maintaining email list serves, or host discussion forums, and other opportunities according to the interests of the fellow and the more immediate Force11 activities. We anticipate that this fellow will also assist with website and promotional material design. This fellow will work closely with the Webmaster and the community as described above.This internship will help Force11 grow as an organization into a more efficient and effective effort that is applicable and relevant to all people in all nations.

Tasks:

  • Website development (manage and sustain the interface of the webpage).

  • Innovative implementation of the community outcomes into the website and other digital channels of the organization.

  • Design materials for Force11 (promotion materials, marketing materials, summer institute materials, events related materials, logos … etc).

  • Manage the members database.

  • Create new and manage already existing channels for community engagement (discussion forums, mailing lists..etc).

  • Collaborate with the Community Engagement Fellow to facilitate the process of sending regular updates, posts, newsletters … etc.

Desired skills and qualifications include:

  • Drupal or other content management system implementation and maintenance.

  • Scripting in common languages, such as Python, Perl, Bash, etc.

  • Design skills and use of platforms such as InDesign, Adobe suite, or similar.

  • Website development.

  • Git version control.

  • English language proficiency.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT FELLOW

Description: This fellowship aims to synergize and coordinate activities amongst the Force11 Working groups, advisory and executive boards, events, projects, the Force11 community, and external organizations and activities. The fellow will oversee communication, marketing, and list management for FORCE11 sponsored events, participate on the event organizing committees and support the committee with communication activities helping promote the events, writing articles, blogs, and providing content for social media outlets. They will also be responsible for identifying new synergies across working groups and with external organizations, essentially helping to prevent Force11 from becoming an echo chamber and simultaneously promoting transparency, coordination, and “team science” across the organization. Importantly, this fellow will be responsible for assisting Force11 in improving reach around the world. How can we better include and serve those in all countries? Finally, we hope that this fellow will develop new strategies for understanding what we are currently doing in Force11 to inform what we could be doing in the future. This internship will therefore help Force11 grow as an organization into a more efficient and effective effort that is applicable and relevant to all people in all nations.

Tasks:

  • Create content to disseminate to the community, blogs, monthly newsletter, conference and institute activities.  

  • Create content and disseminate through social media outlets.

  • Design methods to promote social interaction between the working groups.

  • Update the Force 11 community on working groups’ activities and outcomes.

  • Outreach to other related organization and communities.

  • Outreach to engage communities with different geographical backgrounds.

Desired skills and qualifications include:

  • Writing Skills.

  • Interest in and knowledge of social networking and collaborations.

  • Personable and outgoing.

  • Social media experience.

  • Document management (Dropbox, Google docs, Box, calendars, email, etc).

  • Project management skills.

  • English language proficiency.
