Program overview

Electrical engineering addresses the high-technology needs of business and industry by offering a rich academic program that includes analog and digital integrated circuits, digital signal processing, radiation and propagation, power electronics, control systems, communications, circuit theory, computer architecture, computer-aided design, embedded systems, solid-state devices, microelectromechanical systems (MEMs), robotics and energy. Our nationally recognized program combines the rigor of theory with the reality of engineering practice.

The major prepares students for exciting careers within the varied electrical engineering and allied disciplines and for positions in business management. Graduates also have the foundation to pursue advanced study at the most prestigious graduate schools.

The curriculum, co-op program, and facilities are designed to accomplish the program’s educational objectives. Since the ability to design is an essential part of electrical engineering, students are presented with challenging design problems in a number of courses, beginning with Freshman Practicum (EEEE-105) in the first year.

To strengthen students’ applied knowledge, laboratories are an integral part of many courses. The department offers a number of classes in studio-style lecture labs, where the instructor presents the lecture in a fully instrumented room that allows immediate observation and implementation of important engineering ideas. Many of our alumni report that the college’s facilities are comparable to the best in the industry.

Energy Option

Energy has received a worldwide attention in recent years because of the diminishing natural resources, emergence of novel technologies such as smart grid as well as engineering innovations in photovoltaic cells, wind turbines and other renewable energy sources. In addition, modern power system management involves energy conservation, an area that has also elicited opportunities for research.

POSSIBLE CAREER OPTIONS

Because RIT Dubai graduates are adept at problem solving and have real-world experience and team skills, they are in high demand. Our electrical engineering alumni work in every conceivable industry, from medical to military, power distribution to communication and financial services. The computer industry attracts many of our graduates, who are innovators with a track record of success in areas as diverse as research and development to marketing and sales.

Graduates with the energy option are expected to innovate in this field and expand research activities in the area of renewable energy. With the large-scale initiatives in renewable energy development that the UAE is witnessing, an increase in the demand for professionals in the Energy sector is expected to grow in the near future. Our graduates will respond to the growing need for trained electrical engineers with a deeper understanding of the renewable energy issues. These opportunities reside with the utilities authorities and companies (DEWA, ADWEA, SEWA, and FEWA), Oil and Gas companies (ADNOC, BP, TOTAL), local and federal environmental agencies, and research and development agencies (MASDAR, GE, Schneider Electric, Siemens)

ACCREDITATION

The Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering program is accredited by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and is licensed by the KHDA. The main BS Electrical Engineering program at Rochester NY is also accredited by ABET and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. As per ABET requirements, the Dubai BS Electrical Engineering program is expected to apply for ABET accreditation on graduating the first class of students in June 2015.

FOCUS AREAS

Students may develop a focus area in one of four options. Students complete all the required courses for the BS in electrical engineering and choose their free and professional electives from a specified set of courses in one of the following areas: Energy / Computer Engineering / Robotics / Wireless Communication.

Students admitted to the RIT Dubai campus may pursue their degrees towards a BS in general Electrical Engineering and BS in Electrical Engineering with Energy Option. The other options are available only through an exchange or transfer arrangement, which are subject to achieving additional respective requirements and approvals as outlined in the academic policies and procedures.

COOPERATIVE EDUCATION

Cooperative education is a full-time paid work experience in the student’s field of study. The Electrical Engineering co-op curriculum requires the completion of 50 weeks in one or more of the Electrical Engineering domains such as devices and integrated circuits, computer and digital systems, signal processing, control, and communications. Co-op can be completed in two 25-week blocks; each block is a summer and a regular
semester.

Co-op is designed to be a learning experience for the student as well as a productive working assignment for the employer. The experience should emphasize real-world tasks and responsibilities that grow with the student's increased knowledge, skills, and experiences.
