Zurbarán Centre for Spanish and Latin American Art Doctoral Scholarship 2019, Durham University, UK

The Zurbarán Centre for Spanish and Latin American Art is pleased to invite applications for a fully funded* doctoral scholarship in Spanish art-historical studies, commencing at Durham University in the academic year 2019/20. The deadline for the application is March 31st. The Zurbarán Doctoral Scholarship for the Study of Spanish Art has been created thanks to the generous support of CEEH (Centro de Estudios Europa Hispánica), in association with ARTES and The Auckland Project, and will be devoted to art-historical projects on Spanish art of the Golden Age and/or its legacy in Britain and/or Europe up to the 19th century. The successful candidate will enjoy privileged access to the Spanish Gallery at The Auckland Project in Bishop Auckland, which houses one of the most remarkable collections of Spanish art in the UK.

Benefits

The scholarship is tenable for three years full-time or five years part-time, and offers the following financial support package: (1) an annual maintenance allowance at Research Council rates; (2) fees at Home / EU rates; (3) the University host department may be able to offer paid teaching and/or further research assistance opportunities.

Who We Are Looking For

We are looking for candidates with the following credentials:

• a first-class or very good 2:1 undergraduate degree;
• an MA (completed or in progress) in a relevant subject area at distinction or near-distinction level;
• a high-standard of English language fluency (IELTS score of 7.0 or above, with no components below 6.0, taken after the 31st March 2017; foreign students who studied in the UK for 2 years or more are exonerated from taking the test);
• an outstanding academic record and research potential;
• a high-quality research project that can be completed within 3 years;
• a clear and credible link between the proposed research and the expertise of the supervisory team;
• a clear understanding of how the project fits with the research environment of the Zurbarán Centre.

How to Apply

Applicants must demonstrate that Spanish art or visual culture forms the focus of their proposed research topic; projects on Spanish colonial or Latin American art are not considered for this programme. Applicants are advised to contact the administration of the Zurbarán Centre (zurbaran.centre@durham.ac.uk) to discuss their research proposal well before submitting their application by the deadline of Sunday 31st March 2019.

Interested students should apply to the PhD programme “History of Art and Architecture” by completing Durham University’s postgraduate on-line application form , stating that you wish to be considered for a Zurbarán Doctoral Scholarship when asked to indicate in the Funding section how you intend to fund your studies.

How to prepare your application

All applicants for a Zurbarán Doctoral Scholarship must also create and upload two scholarship documents within the Funding section:

1. A summary of the research project they plan to conduct as part of their online application. This proposal should not exceed 750 words in length (excluding bibliography) and must set out the following:
   • the research questions or problems that the research will address;
   • the research context (i.e. past and current scholarship in the field and artistic repertoire of reference);
   • the contribution to knowledge and understanding the project will make to the field;
   • the approach/methodology that will be employed and an explanation of why it is the most appropriate approach for addressing the research questions/problems;
   • the resources and facilities that will be used during the research project, where they are located, and how they will be accessed.
2. An academic writing sample of 3000-5000 words, in English or another major European language, preferably offering analysis of the era or themes related to the doctoral project. This sample can be a previous essay, MA dissertation excerpt or research paper.

Applicants should have an excellent reading knowledge of Spanish.

Selection Process

A Selection Panel headed by the Director of the Zurbarán Centre will meet soon after the application deadline to consider the submitted proposals and their relevance to the research parameters of the Scholarship. The successful candidate will be contacted in the first instance by email, and unsuccessful applicants will be advised of the outcome soon afterwards.
