Doug Banks Renewable Energy Vision Scholarship Program 2018, South Africa

Publish Date: Sep 14, 2017

Deadline: Sep 29, 2017

2018 scholarship applications.

Applications for 2018 are now open.

Every year or two we embark on a search for bright young minds with a passion for making a difference and addressing the problem of Energy Access and Poverty in Africa.  Other aspects of Renewables or Energy in general are not our focus area.

Applications will close on 29 September 2017, when we will need to work through the submissions, identify those most aligned with our goals and shortlist candidates for interviews and assessment.  We usually make an announcement mid-November, so once you have submitted and received the acknowledgement email, please don't expect any news before then.

The Doug Banks Renewable Energy Vision is a South African initiative aimed at building intellectual capital in the field of Renewable Energy.

Dr Doug Banks was a man who was passionate about meeting Africa's energy challenges through the development of Renewable Energy. Through a deep understanding of people and technology, Doug was able to speak to and shape national renewable energy policies.  A number of young professionals owe their career choice to Doug's enthusiastic mentorship.

This initiative is set on finding undergraduate students, preferably from an engineering, scientific or technical background who are willing and able to carry forward Doug's passion and vision.

The Doug Banks Renewable Energy Vision Trust has been formed by friends and colleagues of Dr Doug Banks who, after his untimely death in July 2008, decided to create something that would become a legacy of a truly remarkable man.

The purpose of the Doug Banks Renewable Energy Vision:

  • We aim to attract, identify and mentor bright, capable young people who both want to study further in Renewable Energy; and have a desire to solve the challenges of Africa's future energy needs.
  • We intend to partner with sponsors who share our desire to develop Renewable Energy intellectual capital in South Africa, in order to build a trust fund which can to a large degree sustain itself.
  • We wish to form a network of professionals who wish to see bright young minds mentored in Renewable Energy.
  • Through this, we aim to create a living tribute to Dr Doug Banks and to carry forward his vision and passion for Renewable Energy.

Passion

If you have a desire to make a difference to Africa's energy needs through Renewables;
If you are committed to using your skills in Africa to further the impact of renewable energy amongst disadvantaged urban and rural communities;
If you are a person of high integrity and energy, with a desire to champion the use of renewable energy in the energy sector within Africa;
If you are also a person who is prepared to mentor others following you
...you may just be the person we are looking for!
A two year scholarship is available to study towards a postgraduate degree in Renewable Energy studies at a South African university from 2010 to an undergraduate or postgraduate student, preferably from an engineering, scientific or technical background. Applicants will need to convince the selection panel that they are a fitting candidate to carry forward the vision and passion of late Dr Doug Banks.
South African citizens or permanent residents may apply. Please note that funds will only be released once proof of successful registration for postgraduate studies at the relevant university is provided.  Funding for the 2nd year of studies will be dependent on favourable progress during the 1st year.

SANEA Energy Rendezvous

Our Scholars Kim Pillay & Kyle Swartz were part of a panel of four post-grad students who presented at the SANEA Energy Rendezvous, co-hosted by DBREV, on Wednesday 26 July, at the Protea Hotel Victoria Junction in Green Point.

DBREV are joining SANEA as an Associate Member. This will allow the DBREV community to attend their events at no charge. We're looking at the possibility of making this collaboration an annual event.
