The School of Business, Economics and Law has more than 3700 students, 470 employees, and 160 international university partners. There are four departments for the School’s main areas of study. The School is one of about 80 universities in the world with a Triple Crown accreditation. This includes the EQUIS, AACSB and AMBA accreditation associations, which ascertain an international recognition of high quality management education.
The Department of Business Administration, with around 100 teacher-researchers and 50 doctoral students, is the largest department in the School of Business, Economics and Law. We are one of the leading research department in the field of economic geography in the Nordic countries and our research has a strong tradition in empirically based research aiming for publications in well recognized scientific journals.
Job assignments
We are looking for a qualified and motivated individual for one doctoral studentship in economic geography. The research in economic geography at Gothenburg University is particularly oriented towards geographical aspects of International business (for example foreign trade, international direct investments and technology- and knowledge transfer) and regional economic transformation and structural change (for example changes in regional specialization patterns and labour market mobility). The PhD student will be affiliated to one of our research centres: CIBS (Centre for International Business Studies), or CRA (Centre for Regional Analysis). Current research in economic geography in Gothenburg is employing quantitative methods and large datasets, as well as case study methodology.
An employed doctoral student should primarily devote themselves to their own education. A PhD studentship entails full-time work. Departmental duties may amount to a maximum of 20% of full time spread over the period of study. The total period of employment may not exceed a period corresponding to four years of full-time third cycle study. The time at which the research student was studying but not employed as a doctoral student will be deducted from this period. The regulations governing the employment of doctoral students may be found in Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 of the Higher Education Ordinance. Only a person who is being admitted or already has been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be employed as a doctoral student.
Eligibility
The applicant must meet both the "General entry requirements" and the "Specific entry requirements". To meet the "general entry requirements" the applicant must have
1. a degree awarded at second-cycle (advanced level),
2. completed studies worth at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are awarded at second-cycle level (advanced level), or 3. an equivalent level of knowledge acquired in Sweden or in another country.
A person meets the "specific entry requirements" for third-cycle studies in economic geography if he or she has completed at least 90 higher education credits in economic geography, of which at least 15 higher education credits are from the completion of a degree project, or alternatively has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad, for example through studies in a neighbouring discipline, such as human geography, business administration, economics and economic history.
Assessment
Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for education on a doctoral level are given in SFS 1998:80.
