About
This scheme offers short-term funding for biomedical researchers to travel between the UK and the Middle East to learn new techniques and develop academic collaborations.
The scheme is administered by the Academy of Medical Sciences (opens in a new tab) on behalf of the Daniel Turnberg Memorial Fund. The Wellcome Trust, together with several other funders, provides funding to support the fellowships.

What we offer
A Daniel Turnberg Travel Fellowship can be for four weeks or three months.
Four week fellowship
The fellowship provides up to £3,500 to cover the costs of travel and a subsistence allowance for a period of up to four weeks. Up to £750 of this amount can be used to cover the cost of airfares.
Three month fellowship
The fellowships provides up to £9,000 to cover the costs of travel and a subsistence allowance for a period of up to three months. Up to £750 of this amount can be used to cover the cost of airfares.

Who can apply
You can apply for a Daniel Turnberg Travel Fellowship if you’ve shown signs of commitment to a career in academia (eg you have a higher qualification such as an MD or a PhD). Your research must fall within the broad scope of medical or bioscience research.
You’ll be at the early- to mid-stage of your research career and typically at the lecturer and/or postdoctoral level.
The scheme is open to medical researchers and bioscientists from the following countries:
- Egypt
- Israel
- Jordan
- Lebanon
- the Palestinian Territories
- the UK.
