PhD scholarship in Corporate Governance

Copenhagen Business School invites applications for a vacant PhD scholarship in Corporate Governance and Board Work at the Center for Corporate Governance (CCG), which is part of Department of Accounting.

The Center for Corporate Governance is one of the leading corporate
governance centers in Europe.
Currently, the core research areas of the center are as follows 1)
ownership structures (including industrial foundations) 2) board work and 3)
Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC). It is the ambition of the center to be in the
international frontline in these research areas; to publish our research
results in leading international journals; to have an excellent research
environment; to seek synergy between research and teaching, and to have a strong
partnership with the business community.

Teaching responsibilities of the Department comprise undergraduate and graduate teaching in Corporate Governance, Financial Accounting, Management Accounting and Auditing.

Research
In recent years board work, including selecting the right corporate
governance standards, has emerged as an important, new topic for business
practices and research. Board leadership, combined with strong Corporate
Governance principles, is essential in long-term value creation. Boards are
becoming more active in various functions of the business and therefore seen as
proactive value creators. Board complexity, including essential areas like
leadership, compliance and risk management, has increased dramatically. The
strategic dimension of both local and international board work is becoming
exceptionally demanding due to changes in business models, new technology,
globalization, increasing regulation and unpredictable market conditions.
Hence, the responsibilities of board members are expected to increase. The
environment will require more diversity, different skill sets and different
decision-making patterns. At the same time company stakeholders, including
shareholders, regulators and media, are becoming more demanding and
continuously raise the standards for board members, managers and investors.

Applicants
are required to develop a well-specified research proposal, which should relate
to one or more of the following thematic areas:
  • Corporate governance drivers in
M&A transactions among Danish SMEs focussing on long-term and sustainable
value creation for the corporation, shareholders and employees. It would
be of particular value of this research proposal could be linked to assessing
the actual skill base of the acquiring board and/or management team(s)
  • Competences
and complementarities needed in the boardroom and among top-managers in order
successfully to activate knowledge synergies and merge firm cultures.
The Department will give priority to applicants with high grades
from their universities and students with a strong quantitate skill base

The three-year PhD programme at CBS allows you to conduct research under
the supervision of CBS professors, supported by research training courses. The
programme is highly international, and you are expected to participate in
international research conferences and to spend time abroad as a visiting PhD
student.

CBS PhD graduates are held in high esteem not only in academia and research institutions but also in government and business where their research qualifications are increasingly demanded. One third of CBS PhD graduates go on to employment outside universities and public research institutions.

Copenhagen Business School has a broad commitment to the excellence, distinctiveness and relevance of its teaching and research programmes. Candidates who wish to join us should demonstrate enthusiasm for working in an organisation of this type (highlighting, for example, relevant business, educational and dissemination activities).
